ROCK HILL, SC (04-17-2025) — In another win for pro-life free speech on campuses, Winthrop University corrected course and has officially recognized the Students for Life of America (SFLA) group on campus. This marks a major victory for pro-life student Riley Dill, who battled against initial rejection after SFLA’s pro-life stance was deemed “too emotional” by the university’s staff. “This brave student did exactly what she was supposed to do: fight for her free speech rights. And Winthrop University leadership did exactly what they were supposed to do: immediately right this anti-American wrong,” said Hawkins. “SFLA and our legal counsel proudly stand by ambitious and courageous students like Dill, whose desire was to have a group on campus that reflected her passion. We’re grateful that Winthrop University took swift action and hope other schools will note the outcome. We are willing to engage legal action to ensure that free speech stays free for students.”

SFLA frequently has to fight for our First Amendment freedoms on school campuses. Some recent wins include: 

• The University of New Mexico (UNM) charging security fees for campus free speech events. SFLA’s general counsel reached an agreement with UNM, and Students for Life at UNM are finally relieved of their $5,461.40 fine.   
• The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill) agreed to back down after surprising the Carolina Students for Life with seemingly discriminatory fees following Hawkins’ speaking tour stop at the school in 2023.  
• The East Career Technical Academy (ECTA) and the Clark County School District (CCSD) were served a free speech lawsuit by student plaintiffs from ECTA SFLA’s leadership team with help from SFLA, Thomas More Society, and the O’Mara Law Firm.

South Carolina has been a hot bed of abortion activism lately, with opposition coming from those who say they are “friends.” During the 2024 election, after three Republican State Senators, the “Sister Senators,” sided with Democrats to kill a life-saving bill, SFLAction engaged in educating people about their records during the primary. All three were ousted from the South Carolina Senate, and the bill is back in play.
