China’s One-Child Fallout: A Nation Haunted by Its Own Policy

China is infamous for its authoritarian tyranny – including over the family planning choices of its citizens. For 35 tragic years, their Communist regime enforced a one-child policy that crippled China’s population, stunted their economy, contributed to untold abortion atrocities, and severely damaged the attitudes of their millennials and Gen Z when it comes to starting families of their own. Now, in an ironic twist, their government is frantically looking to undo the damage by financially incentivizing young people to HAVE babies.

Listening to the stories of Chinese men and women who suffered under those 35 years of the One-Child Policy is heart-wrenching beyond words. Often more disturbing than the darkest dystopian novels, mothers and fathers have painfully recounted stories of late-term forced abortions and beyond-crippling fines for exceeding the legal limit on children.

It’s hard to blame today’s Chinese youth for being wary.

They are, of course, among the victims in this sad story where an overreaching government is the villain. Commodifying human beings always ends with pain and violence. The Chinese powers-that-be are now finding themselves in a demographic crisis with a large, rapidly-aging population and a smaller generation of young people who aren’t swayed by state-sponsored incentives to have kids of their own.

In other words, the authorities are finding out the hard way that throwing some cash on the table isn’t enough to erase the fear and trauma they’ve been cultivating for decades.

Sadly, this isn’t the only drama brewing in The People’s Republic lately, as there’s news making the rounds of “eleven domestic workers [being] arrested in Hong Kong on suspicion of “child destruction” and illegal abortions,” according to BBC.

The disturbing story involves late-term abortions very dangerously undergone , allegedly via Chemical Abortion Pills, by domestic workers in one of China’s largest cities. Harrowingly, BBC reports one baby found, possibly killed by the drugs, was at least 28 weeks. And it all only came to light because the mother collapsed and required urgent medical help.

For reference, in the U.S., the Chemical Abortion regimen is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks’ gestation. The pills, already dangerous to being with, pose increasing safety risks to the mother with each passing week. In fact, Chemical Abortion Pills have killed 36 women (whom we know of) in the U.S. & injured thousands more since their legalization in 2000

A combination of the pandemic and the reversal of Roe v. Wade in the U.S. in 2022 has given rise to an empire of Chemical Abortion pill-pushers who brazenly mail the drugs to whomever has the cash – from minors and their abusers to vulnerable women who plan to perilously take the drugs with no medical supervision.

We expect to see an increasing number of sad stories like this one out of Hong Kong as the black market of Chemical Abortion Pills develops into a genuine epidemic… and those distributing the drugs en masse with no regard for anyone’s safety must be held accountable. Needless to say, between China’s current birthrate crisis and their struggles with apparent Chemical Abortion Pill trafficking, their culture – like ours – is in need of a reminder about the inherent dignity of ALL human life.
