Daily Caller News Foundation: Pro-Life Activists Call On Congress To ‘Defund Big Abortion’

Read an excerpt from the article:

Amid a sea of people donning blue “Defund Big Abortion” shirts, activist groups, including Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, Students for Life Action and And Then There Were None, led citizen lobbyists through the Canon House of Representatives building before gathering for a press conference in front of the Capitol reflecting pool. Planned Parenthood — the largest abortion provider in the country — on average receives more than $500 million in federal funds annually, according to a U.S. Government Accountability study, and the pro-life groups contend that this funding should be discontinued.

… Students for Life Action president Kristan Hawkins spoke at the press conference, saying Democrats lost the 2024 election “epically” after running on “the most radical abortion agenda in American history.”

“This brings us to our historic moment, where the pro-life movement stands unified behind a single message: Defund the entire abortion industry and defund their long-time standard bearer  – Planned Parenthood – once and for all,” Hawkins said. “Like many politically protected businesses, corruption and reports of botched care for women are so widespread and egregious that even The New York Times has finally admitted there are serious, systemic problems.

POLITICO: Playbook PM: Another Trump nom on the brink

Read an excerpt from the article:

UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Several anti-abortion groups, organized by Students for Life, are launching a lobbying effort in D.C. today pushing Congress and the Trump administration on “eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood ahead of the Supreme Court hearing a case in April that could strip the organization’s funding in South Carolina,” AP’s Christine Fernando writes. “The anti-abortion groups are taking aim at abortion providers under an initiative called Defund Planned Parenthood, which targets federal Medicaid funding for the reproductive health care provider.”

Roll Call: Fully in power, GOP targets Planned Parenthood

Read an excerpt from the article:

“Abortion in America has been bizarrely enshrined in our federal public policy for decades,” said Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins on Thursday during a rally held outside the Capitol. “If Planned Parenthood is defunded, we can Make America Healthy Again by ensuring those health care dollars continue to stay with women and families who need them.”

Hawkins’ group launched an ad campaign last month calling on Trump to call to defund Planned Parenthood. Lawmakers who addressed the event included Reps. Mary Miller, R-Ill., Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., Christopher H. Smith, R-N.J. and Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.

On Wednesday, more than 150 anti-abortion groups sent letters to lawmakers calling on Republicans to include language that would make Planned Parenthood ineligible to receive federal Medicaid reimbursements. Similar language was included in two reconciliation bills that would have repealed the 2010 health care law: a 2016 bill vetoed by then-President Barack Obama and a separate 2017 House-passed bill.

Speaking at the rally, SBA Pro-life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said this will be the first time since 2017 that it’s politically realistic to defund Planned Parenthood.

“I can tell you one thing, this movement is completely unified in its first priority, and that is to defund big abortion in this reconciliation bill,” she said.

National Catholic Register: Pro-Life Advocates Lobby Congress to Defund Planned Parenthood

Read an excerpt from the article:

More than 300 pro-life activists from 39 different states gathered on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on March 27

… Kristen Hawkins, president of Students for Life Action, called the day a “historic moment,” as “the pro-life movement stands unified behind one single message, defund the entire abortion industry, defund the longtime standard bearer of Planned Parenthood once and for all.”

Hawkins explained that next steps will include rallies across more than 100 cities to “tell President Trump and our legislative players here on Capitol Hill, in our state capitals, that it’s very clear what they must do next. Defund your political enemies, invest in lifesaving, life-affirming medical care.”

The Hill (Reposted, MSN): GOP lawmakers in 10 states introduce bills to treat abortion as homicide

Read an excerpt from the article:

… A 2024 poll from NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist found that the overwhelming majority of Americans — 84 percent — do not believe women who have had an abortion should face penalties, fines or jail time.

… Students for Life of America, for instance, opposes such bills because they fail to address a “predatory industry” that exploits vulnerable women to make money and prosecute pregnant people who could have been coerced into abortion, a spokesperson said.

“Maybe instead of wasting our time on a circular firing squad and debating who can hand out the most prison sentences to prove that they are the most anti-abortion one out there, maybe get to work and elect 100 percent pro-life champions … who will stand with us to pass substantial legislation,” Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said in a recent episode on her podcast

… Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America “does not support legislation to criminalize women and qualify them for the death penalty,” Kelsey Pritchard, the group’s political affairs communications director, told The Hill. “No state pro-life law criminalizes women and that’s not changing as not a single one of these bills has passed out of committee.”
