A group of Christian and conservative investors banded together to send a strong message to several major retailers such as Walmart, Costco, and Kroger that are putting money above millions of women: don’t sell dangerous Chemical Abortion Pills.

The coalition, organized by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), sent letters to the CEOs of Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Albertsons, and medical distribution company McKesson in August, urging them to reject calls from the New York City Comptroller to begin selling the Chemical Abortion Pill, mifepristone immediately.

The coalition is led by Inspire Investing, a Boise, Idaho, company that owns about $172 million in shares of the five retailers.

In his letters, Comptroller Brad Lander voiced concerns about potential reputational risks and the companies’ “commitment to maximizing sales and long-term shareholder value.”

But is the maximization of sales worth the risk to women’s lives?

In a statement, ADF Senior Vice President of Corporate Engagement Jeremy Tedesco emphasized this very concern.

“As the letter emphasizes, the legal landscape on dangerous chemical abortion drugs is anything but settled. The FDA’s own label admits that roughly one in 25 women who take this drug will end up in the ER,” Tedesco said. “Retail pharmacies are there to serve the health and wellness of their customers, but abortion drugs like mifepristone undermine that mission by putting women’s health at risk.” (emphasis added)

Chemical abortion has been a hot topic in the news after the tragic death of young Georgia mother, Amber Thurman. After arriving late for an appointment for a surgical abortion in North Carolina, the abortion vendor distributed chemical abortion pills.

It is unknown if there was any discussion about Thurman being pregnant with twins or that the dosage might not work for her pregnancy. It’s also unclear if she was told about the health risks of Chemical Abortion Pills or if an ultrasound was offered at the abortion facility, which would have shown more about her condition.

Once at home, Thurman became ill. She eventually went to a Georgia emergency room. Georgia has a pro-life heartbeat law, but the law allows for saving a mother’s life. Thurman was diagnosed with sepsis at the hospital. After 20 hours, surgery was performed, but her infection took her life.

Now, this story has been spun by the abortion industry and pro-abortion politicians as a reason for repealing pro-life laws. However, what it is is an example of the dangers of chemical abortion and how recklessly Chemical Abortion Pills are being distributed to women.

For example, a study that Students for Life of America (SFLA) includes on our Chemical Abortion information page surveyed 1,000 women who had attempted chemical abortions:

  • Seven of them reported needing a blood transfusion afterward.
  • Twenty-six reported needing antibiotics for an infection.
  • For 50 women, the drugs failed, and a surgical abortion was sought.
  • Ninety-three reported experiencing any symptoms for which they were advised to seek medical advice, and 87 sought medical attention.

Chemical abortion has caused the deaths of at least 32 women since it was first approved in the U.S., according to the FDA. Obviously and tragically, these lethal drugs have also killed millions of preborn babies.

Despite this, the Biden administration’s FDA has removed safeguards around Chemical Abortion Pills that were designed to protect women’s lives, including an in-person dispensing requirement. This means that mifepristone can now be remotely prescribed and sent to a woman via mail without a follow-up appointment that would ensure no baby parts are left inside of her.

Some groups are disregarding women’s safety by facilitating the shipment of foreign abortion pills to women without verification of identity, personal details like age, or how far along they are in their pregnancy. These pills are sent with no prescriptions – even in states that require in-person abortions. No factual personal information or ultrasound is needed to order chemical abortion pills from these distributors.

6,000 Costco members have signed a petition saying they’ll cancel memberships if Costco starts selling Chemical Abortion Pills, while an additional 2,000 investors and concerned citizens have signed—a display that shows we are the pro-life generation and are willing to prove that with our money and resources.

Chemical abortion kills women and their children, but these grocery chains seem more concerned about the money they’ll make rather than the lives they’ll destroy and kill. Easier access to these pills puts women’s safety – and lives – at risk and will lead to the deaths of millions more children in the United States.

Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Albertsons, and McKesson – prioritize the health and safety of women over pressure from pro-abortion government officials. Chemical abortion hurts women and kills preborn children, and it’s crucial for pharmacies to protect women’s health by refusing to sell mifepristone.
