GUEST POST: As we come to the close of the 2022-2023 academic year, Students for Life of America (SFLA) will be giving out three end-of-year awards for Best New Group, Best High School Group, and Best College Group — and you get to help us choose which groups deserve these awards! Students for Life Puerto Rico is nominated to receive Best New Group of the Year. Learn more about this group below and decide whether they’ll have your vote:    

Students for Life Puerto Rico was officially established in December 2022, but they have been doing events since September. They have around 40 members, and their plan is to have SFLA groups in campuses all over the island. Through dedicated and dependable leadership, they have already started a second group!  

This group is gritty in several ways. For one, they only have the resources that they can print so they make all their own materials. They also have encountered and overcome free speech issues on their campus. Even though they faced push-back from administration during the process of becoming formerly recognized, they kept persisting, and after four months, they finally became official. 

Students for Life Puerto Rico has organized or attended 21 events so far, including the Puerto Rico March for Life, the National Pro-Life March, and the National Pro-Life Summit. These include (but are not limited to) giving out Valentine’s Day cards to students that read “Your Life Matters;” hosting an abortion debate; holding a virtual apologetics training with their Regional Coordinator; planning a food donation event after Hurricane Fiona; hosting a pro-life speaker and an ‘Unplanned’ movie night; tabling on campus and in the community; sidewalk counseling and giving blessing bags to abortion-seeking women; and participating in prayer vigils regularly.

They have also gone door-knocking to inform the local community of life-affirming care and organized giving snack bags to students during finals. This group also has an active Instagram account, spreading the pro-life message in-person and online.
