The Equal Rights Amendment Isn’t a Zombie — So Stop Trying to Bring it Back to Life

Like a zombie from a movie about the undead, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) — or as Students for Life of America (SFLA) likes to call it, the Everything Related to Abortion amendment — is once again being pushed by the abortion lobby despite the fact that it should be dead as a result of it’s long overdue deadline for ratification.

SFLA President Kristan Hawkins recently published a Fox News op-ed on this topic entitled “The Equal Rights Amendment is Roaming the Halls of Congress Again With This Alarming Makeover.” Her article memorably compares the ERA’s resurrection to an episode of “The Walking Dead.” She writes:

“On deadlines: Congress gave proponents of the ERA until 1979 to get 38 states’ approval to add it to the Constitution. And they failed, getting only 35 states to buy in. So, some in Congress rigged a 1982 extension. Again, it was a swing and a miss. But in a the-rules-don’t-apply-to-me kind of mindset, ERA activists ignored the facts, pushing its ratification far beyond its shelf life.”

(To understand how the ERA is both pro-abortion and anti-woman despite its deceiving name, click HERE to read another SFLA blog entitled “The ERA Sequel No One Asked For: Fighting the “Everything Related to Abortion” Act…Again.”)

The ERA’s expiration date is now decades behind us yet modern abortion supporters have once again brough it to the floor, disregarding rules and even some of the opinions of those on their own side. Hawkins highlights this, continuing:

“Deadlines are not a figment of congressional imagination; they are the purview of entire rule-setting committees. The clock ran out on ERA ratification, as the National Archives noted when refusing to publish the ERA as an addition to the U.S. Constitution.

“This is not a ‘conservative’ view. The abortion-supporting, late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, said the ERA – like old milk – had passed its expiration date, and it was time to throw out a stale and stalled ERA.”

As Hawkins clearly articulated, the ERA had its lawful chance for ratification and lost its shot like many other amendments before and after it. It shouldn’t get special treatment in our political system because it’s pro-abortion, and it’s high time that abortion supporters let it go. In fact, they should take a note from Regina George in ‘Mean Girls:’ stop trying to make the ERA happen. It’s not going to happen — not if the Pro-Life Generation has anything to say about it.
