A new investigative report from Nigeria by Reuters has confirmed yet another one of the pro-life movement’s fears about Chemical Abortion pills: these life-ending drugs are being used as a weapon of war. Students for Life of America (SFLA) has been sounding the alarm for years that Chemical Abortion pills are a powerful evil in the wrong hands, and in the hands of mass-murderers, these drugs are making war crimes possible. Here’s what you need to know:
In the recent report entitled “The Abortion Assault,” Reuters reported on the Nigerian military running a secret mass abortion program as a part of their war against Boko Haram, an Islamic terrorist group. The article’s details expose a horrific, secret program which has existed since at least 2013 and aborted the children of at least 10,000 women and girls — the majority of which were carried out without the mother’s consent.
Reuters’ investigation was based on interviews with 33 different women and young girls who said Chemical Abortions had been committed on them while in the hands of the Nigeran Army — but how many women actually consented? One.
Many of the women had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants, “rescued” by the Nigerian Army, and then forced into a Chemical Abortion without their knowledge. Soldiers and guards of the Nigerian Army said that women were often assured that the Chemical Abortion pills were for restorative health reasons and took them without force under the deception. In other circumstances, women were beaten, held at gunpoint, tied down, or drugged into compliance as the abortion drugs were fed to them.
When the women cried and asked why the soldiers had forced abortions upon them and their children, they went told to keep silent about it or the soldiers would kill. One woman said, “If they had left me with the baby, I would have wanted it.” Another woefully said that despite the father’s brutality (many of the children were conceived through rape), the “child had done nothing wrong.”
Reuters reported that these women and girls could be as young as 12 years old and ranged from a few weeks to 8 months pregnant — notable since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) holds that Chemical Abortion pills are only “safe” until 10-
The outlet reported that four soldiers and two security officers said they witnessed women die from abortions. One woman recounted a death which was corroborated by another witness, saying, “She was crying, yelling, rolling around, and at long last she stopped rolling and shouting. She became so weak and traumatized, and then she stopped breathing. They just dug a hole, and they put sand over it and buried her.”
The trauma that was inflicted on these women through Chemical Abortion pills (not to mention the death of their preborn children) is exactly what SFLA President Kristan Hawkins recently wrote about in an op-ed at The Federalist. Entitled “How The FDA’s Abortion Pill Mill Enables Domestic Abusers,” her article shows how these pills cause double the disaster when used by an abuser.
She wrote about a recent case in which Texan attorney Mason Herring secretly forced Chemical Abortion drugs on his wife through mixing the drugs into glasses of water, writing:
“Abusers in homes across the nation and worldwide have utilized Chemical Abortion pills in the same way that Herring allegedly did. The vehicle of disguise, however, does change. Women have had deadly abortion pills slipped into their tea, Starbucks, orange juice, yogurt, pancakes, sandwiches, and cereal. In another case, an abuser lied to his partner about what the life-ending drug was, saying it was an antibiotic.
“If it’s something a woman can ingest without suspicion, it can be used as a cover-up. Abusers aren’t picky — just as long as it kills their inconvenience. The overwhelming evidence is clear: Abusers do take advantage of Chemical Abortion pills, and they are a powerful evil in their hands, capable of taking multiple lives.”
(Millennials and Gen Z understand these risks, as SFLA’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement found that in polling 18-34-year-olds earlier this year, 65% supported only distributing Chemical Abortion pills in person in order to “prevent abusive partners or sex traffickers from getting the drug to use on women without their knowledge or consent.”)
Americans — regardless of their own opinions on abortion — need to seriously ask themselves whether these drugs with a considerable propensity for abuse should be allowed to be manufactured; and this Reuters’ report should be enough for us all to say “no.” A war weapon this dangerous should never be produced for public consumption.
