Catholic University Faculty Push Back Against Pro-life Group’s Event on The Pro-Life Response to Rape

Post by Emily Stumpo, Great Lakes Regional Coordinator. On Good Friday, members of Knights for Life at Marian University, located in downtown  Indianapolis, were surprised to receive news that a faculty member in the Department of Psychology had emailed the entire list of faculty department chairs, staff and administrators to lambaste the pro-life event. The faculty member characterized the event as intending to mislead people making a pro-life event  part of sexual assault awareness month. His position was that it was insensitive to survivors of sexual assault to exclusively talk about those survivors who became pregnant after their assault and that the group shouldn’t be holding the event, or at least should vastly change its content.

Pro-Life Easter Tree

Step by Step Guide:

  1. Choose a date and time for your Pro-life Easter Tree. (Choose a day on which your campus is most populated and a time in the day when there will be heavier traffic through campus.)
  2. Choose and reserve a location for your Pro-life Easter Tree.
    1. Find a tree you can easy decorate and reserve for an Easter theme event through your administration; otherwise you will have to build your own tree in a good area.
    2. Choose an area on campus with the most student traffic, such as near the front of the dining hall or student center, etc.
    3. Reserve the area through the administration.
    4. If you cannot reserve a spot on campus, you may be able to get permission to put your display on areas near campus, like city property, a local family’s yard, or a church- yard.
  3. Secure items.
    1. Reserve a tree through the school or borrow a fake tree, either through a family member, donor, local church, local pro-life group, or even buy one as a group.
    2. Buy materials to create large, durable sings for your display.
    3. Buy, burrow, or collect the items to decorate your tree.
      1. Idea: Baby booties that represent born or unborn babies, those alive or those lost, depending on the tone you choose for your display.
      2. Idea: String traditional Easter eggs in the tree and put a small fetal model in each.
      3. Combine both ideas.
  4. Sign people up to run the Pro-life Easter Tree display.
    1. There should always be a couple people from your group running the display for protection.
    2. There should be additional help to sign people up for your group email and meeting updates.
    3. Someone should always have a camera on hand to record any vandalism or inappropriate acts towards your display and/or members.
  5. Invite lots of people to be at the Pro-life Easter Tree display in the morning or afternoon, as a crowd will draw even more people out of interest. You can even schedule of Easter festivities near by, like an Easter Egg Hunt, each egg containing a small fetal model, precious feet, or development facts.
  6. Be prepared with literature.
    1. Have handouts with factual information on abortion, the magnitude of its consequences, various related stats, and fetal development.
    2. Have information available on a local PRC and post-abortive material and references.
    3. Have your group information ready to hand out, so you can recruit new students to your meetings and events.
    4. It would also be wise to have on hand a copy of any communications with the administration allowing you to have your display when and where it is.
  7. Prepare your team and signs!
    1. Make sure your members are all prepared to talk about the display with facts on fetal development through all nine months, abortion techniques, how many abortions occur in the US and your state regularly, facts about Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics, and any other humanitarian, religious, or abortion-related facts that may come up as a result of your display.
    2. Choose your theme with your group members and create your signs accordingly. Make sure all elements of the display and any discussions stay on message!
  8. Set up your display.
    1. Make your display well lit in the evenings if need be.
    2. Post signs conveying your pro-life message around and below your display. Post some signs in the ground with stakes and tape.
    3. Create handouts conveying your message and group info for people passing by your display.
  9. Let SFLA know how it went! We love hearing about your events. Let us know if you have any stories, questions, suggestions, or concerns!
