In early August, rumors swirling around Centreville High School, which is a part of the Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) system, quickly escalated into a full-blown investigation. Allegations surfaced that school administrators had helped students obtain abortions using school funds—without notifying their parents, which is also illegal in Virginia.

Students for Life of America (SFLA) refused to stay silent. On Thursday, August 28th, we spearheaded the STOP SECRET SCHOOL ABORTIONS news conference in our home state of Virginia to respond to these disturbing claims and to send a clear message to school officials everywhere: coerced abortions on minors are unacceptable.

Groups from across Virginia, including Moms for Liberty, Concerned Women for America, the Family Foundation, Human Coalition, and other organizations, gathered to attend and/or speak at our news conference. Lt. Gov. Candidate John Reid showed up in solidarity and took the podium—stressing the importance of parental rights, following basic, common-sense law, and holding Northern Virginia accountable.

SFLA Executive Vice President and candidate for Orange County School Board, Tina Whittington, represented the Pro-Life Generation (PLG) and parents everywhere in her passionate statement:

“We need to keep political agendas out of schools, and what is being investigated here are abortion activists in our schools who may be pushing an abortion agenda on our children, but this is more than an agenda,” said Whittington. “To fund and procure an abortion for a minor child, who they are unrelated to, violates a teacher or administrator’s express duty to the children they serve and even goes against the rights of parents who are best positioned to make medical decisions for their minor children.”

To amplify the SFLA-led call for accountability, a Fairfax County resident, teacher, and proud SFLA alum, Rosie, delivered a powerful testimony at the school board meeting that same evening.

Parents, bystanders, and media were shocked at the allegations and the possibility that school administrators think they have the right to kill their grandchildren. It didn’t matter if they were young or old. Numerous people also came out in support of stopping school abortions by holding signs and making their voices heard.

The media recognized the momentum behind this event. ABC 7, Fox 5, WUSA 9, FFXNow, The Catholic Herald, and numerous other outlets attended and spoke with SFLA staff and students.

The recent allegations that have stemmed from a Substack blog post regarding two young girls who were encouraged to have abortions by school officials at Centreville High School have cast a long and troubling shadow over public education in Virginia. As a teacher in Northern Virginia, I am very horrified that something so horrible and violating could even take place in my hometown of Fairfax.

The girls, minors at 17, did not tell their parents—and their school allegedly wanted this to remain this way. As a parent, this is a parent’s worst fear—that they have seemingly been replaced by the school system they are supposed to trust.

The alarm raised by these claims and the subsequent criminal investigation launched by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin mark a clear, watershed moment for this community.

Our system is broken if this is indeed true—possibly beyond repair if the truth is not brought to light.

These allegations make my blood boil as an educator.  I always keep my parents in the loop about their child and what is being taught in my classroom.  It is a sacred and vital partnership that is the bedrock of that child’s success in the classroom.

As a parent, I would expect the same outreach not only from my child’s teacher, but also from the school system. School does not exist to take guardianship over your child.

A teacher reportedly tried to speak up about this issue.  She went on record with Fox News, saying she had reported what was going on with these girls seven times. Only to be ignored and sidelined.  Why?  She was doing the right thing by those girls.  Why was she ignored? Are teachers not valued by FCPS?

I can tell you—as a teacher, there are times that you are a confidant.  Students trust you and look up to you.  There are issues that may be facing them at home, or questions that they have that they need to ask a safe adult.

However, there are always protocols.  Parents or guardians must be brought into the picture.  Partnerships with guidance or administration must be formed, and in turn, those agencies must work together along with parents and guardians.

One of these students reportedly was five months pregnant and wanted to back out of the abortion.  5 months! A baby can well be living on their own by then! But the school social worker reportedly said the student “had no choice.” Life was allegedly not even considered an option at FCPS.

It is not the school’s job to force a student, a minor, into a decision without consulting the rest of the village that is raising that child. On such an issue as abortion, Centreville High reportedly did not seem concerned with that child or her family’s view on the issue, or perhaps what their faith believed.

No matter where one stands on the issue of abortion or education, the events in Fairfax demand our attention and action. The allegations are serious, and their implications stretch far beyond the walls of Centreville High School. We must insist on clarity, demand answers, and strive always to place the interests of young people and families first.

After all, sunlight is the best medicine.

Thank you.

SFLA was proud to be engaged tonight to raise awareness among the public—to fix our broken education system and stand up for parents—regardless of whether these allegations prove to be true.

Abortions do not belong in our schools.

With our new united coalition standing shoulder to shoulder with concerned citizens tonight, we will make sure that a corrupt and coerced education system is no longer wedging itself between parents, their children, and preborn children ever again.
