“We’ll Be Back … In Time for the Midterms,” Students for Life Action Pledges to Build on the One-Year Pause in Healthcare Funding for Abortion Vendors

“In choosing to redirect healthcare spending to REAL, full-service medical care from abortion vendors for one-year, Republicans have laid a foundation for what we promise will be an on-going push to end federal support for abortion vendors like Planned Parenthood. It’s a first step in the right direction,” said Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins. “Because the Senate GOP leadership decided to whittle the House-passed ten years of defunding down to one, this means that as the midterm elections are shaping up, the GOP will need to build on this and pass additional years of forced federal taxpayer funding of America’s Abortion Goliath. And the Pro-Life Generation will vote Pro-Life First.”

WASHINGTON D.C. (07-01-2025) – As the “Big, Beautiful” Budget Bill vote passed that redirected healthcare spending from Planned Parenthood and all abortion vendors for one year down from 10 years in the initial House-passed version, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins praised the Pro-Life Generation and the tireless efforts of so many who engaged in the election and in reaching out to their legislators as well as our President for the hope of ending forced federal support for abortion & those making billions as they end the lives of innocent babies.

“The silver lining in this dark cloud of politics, in which many of us wanted to see healthcare tax dollars redirected from Planned Parenthood & Big Abortion for 10 years, is not the compromise bill that passed. It’s not the one year – it’s the ONE IDEA – that women don’t need Planned Parenthood, and that idea is shared by the GOP in this bill, by the Supreme Court in the South Carolina win, and by the Pro-Life Generation who could have vote for the most pro-abortion ticket in U.S. History – Harris-Walz – and said no.

“The win is shared by those who have tirelessly engaged in calling on the Republican leadership to act. We wouldn’t have even one-year less in federal support for abortion vendors without the tireless efforts of so many who door knocked, called, and voted their pro-life values,” said Hawkins. “But a one-year pause in abortion industry support demands that we keep going, calling on President Trump, U.S. Senate Leader Thune, and House Speaker Mike Johnson to repeat the formula and to go even further, as this pushes the next conversation on ending support for Big Abortion into the midterm election. And we will vote Pro-Life first.”

NEXT STEPS: When the issue of redirecting healthcare spending from abortion vendors like Planned Parenthood returns, the GOP must demand a continuation of the redirect, as well as support U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) Protect Funding for Women’s Healthcare Act. But the true change can come through a process called debarment.

“The GOP must pursue all-of-the-above to build on the one-year pause. However, given the ability of Planned Parenthood to fill out federal paperwork, Students for Life Action will prioritize a call for debarment, which can find federal vendors unqualified to receive taxpayer resources. When even the New York Times knows Planned Parenthood  is a disaster, it’s time to fire them, just like South Carolina successfully did,” said Hawkins.

SFLAction has called for Planned Parenthood to be debarred since the end of the last Trump Administration. Any federal agency can examine Planned Parenthood’s track record to determine whether they deserve federal resources. In fact, during the Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the nation’s largest abortion vendor, argued that the state of South Carolina had to do business with the disreputable abortion mega-business because they had qualified.

“Being good a paperwork should not ‘qualify’ a business profiting from ending children’s lives in the womb and ending other children’s fertility after birth. Their obsession with cutting off a child’s life disqualifies them, but add to that, their horrific track record,” said Hawkins.

Even the New York Times says they have been shoddy abortion vendors, in a February story titled, Botched Care and Tired Staff: Planned Parenthood in Crisis

Senators Joni Earnst and Rand Paul have called for investigation into almost $90M in COVID Paycheck Relief funds that are alleged to have been improperly given to the abortion vendor, which did NOT qualify for the funds.

Planned Parenthood has faced charges of allowing a racist work environment, financial fraud, failures to report sex crimes, and failing to follow common sense health & safety standards.

And debarment is not a Republican invention. Democratic Senators acknowledge that reports of misdeeds mean a debarment investigation needs to get underway.

As we’ve written before: “In a 2022 letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M., demanded that the Department of Justice (DOJ) get busy with debarment activities.

“They wrote: ‘Agencies possess broad authority to suspend and debar individuals and entities that engage in criminal conduct or pose a risk to the public interest. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) permits an agency to debar an entity if it is convicted of or receives a civil judgment for ‘any … offense indicating a lack of business integrity or business honesty.’ An agency can also debar an entity based on just a ‘preponderance of the evidence’ for ‘any other cause so serious or compelling a nature that it affects the present responsibility of the contractor or subcontractor.’ Before or while a debarment is being considered, agencies can suspend a contractor if there is ‘adequate evidence’ that suspension is necessary to protect the government’s interests. Agencies also have a wide latitude to link contracting companies to the misconduct of any of their employees – including top company executives – as long as the misconduct ‘occurred in connection with the individual’s performance of duties for or on behalf of the contractor, or with the contractor’s knowledge, approval, or acquiescence.’”

Hawkins noted, “Let us say again; This letter is a template for the authority of a Trump-Vance Administration to act, given the misdeeds of Planned Parenthood.”
