Your Tax Dollars at Work: Publicly-Funded NPR Promotes Illegal Underground Abortion Pill Network

The American taxpayer has it pretty rough. It’s bad enough that we are forced to fund Planned Parenthood, the country’s biggest abortion vendor, to the tune of nearly $800 million per year. In the latest federal travesty, it looks like ‘we the taxpayers’ have now spent our hard-earned dollars on a three-part series powered by NPR that instructs mothers in the U.S. on how to illegally (and unsafely) abort their children via Chemical Abortion Pills.

The series, called “Embedded: The Network,” was announced today:

Decades ago, Brazilian women made a discovery that allowed them to have safe abortions without a doctor, regardless of the law. Now, as abortion restrictions rise across the United States, their method is shaping how American women have abortions, too.

In this three-part series, hosts Victoria Estrada and Marta Martinez of Futuro Media’s Latino USA chart the global, loosely connected network that brought this abortion method to millions of women.

We have so many questions.

First: Why is it ok that a publicly funded media outlet is encouraging violent, illegal activity? The sad answer is “because they can get away with it.” There’s no regulatory body that would stop them and, frankly, public outcry would likely be the only way to apply enough pressure for them to renegue on this horrible venture.  I.e. feel free to drop NPR a line about how you feel about this project.

Second: Who says it’s safe? The announcement for the series refers to “safe abortions without a doctor.” Are we to assume that this show is going to cite reputable data about how Brazil has been tracking medical outcomes of the women taking illegal abortion pills? If no such data exists, which it probably doesn’t, that claim is just words tossed into the wind.

After all, our government & other organizations do a little data tracking on the safety of Chemical Abortion in the U.S. (which can be challenging, given there is no national abortion reporting law) and has found that…

  • 1 in 10 women experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or other serious problems.
  • Chemical Abortion has a complication rate four times that of surgical abortion.
  • The risk of needing to visit the ER following a Chemical Abortion rose by 500% between 2002-2015.

Buying potent drugs from a creepy abortion underground and taking them unsupervised is a recipe for disaster. No medical supervision means no ultrasound to check for life-threatening ectopic pregnancy (which Chemical Abortion Pills can’t resolve). No Rh testing to know if the mother is Rh negative, which could result in permanent infertility or recurrent miscarriages in the future. No professional assessment of how far along the mother is, which is extremely relevant in the case of Chemical Abortion where the risk multiplies the later the pills are taken.

Not to mention, a high percentage of the general population fail to take medication correctly (some figures have it as high as 50%). Chemical Abortion is particularly tricky as the “failure rate” of the drugs increases significantly if the first pill is not taken buccally – dissolved in the cheek pouch, as opposed to swallowed outright – and if the second pill is taken too promptly after the first. Difficult dosage instructions are challenging enough under the best of circumstances, yet this underground network is encouraging women to pursue it with no doctor and, presumably, no certainty that the pill distributors are providing accurate information about the “proper protocol” and risks.

Overall, there’s remarkably little evidence that Chemical Abortion is safe – least of all for preborn babies, of course – and far more evidence to the contrary. So… we’d love to see them prove the supposed safety of their drug of choice.

Third: What audience do they think this is going to appeal to? Polling consistently finds that young people do not agree with online, no-test Chemical Abortion – 9 in 10, to be exact. They feel, as any sane person would, uncomfortable with Chemical Abortion being held to totally different safety standards than regular medical procedures. They don’t like not testing for ectopic or later-term pregnancies, failing to perform important Rh testing, or even the ease of abusers getting their hands on abortifacients thanks to “networks” like the one NPR is promoting.

The only people who would host sad little watch parties for this disturbing series are abortion industry execs, abortion lobbyists, the miscellaneous wackos who take Chemical Abortion Pills at publicity stunts and don vagina costumes at protests & statehouses, and the creeps manufacturing and pushing these pills en masse. After all, thanks to pro-abortion fear-mongering and encouragement to “stockpile” the drugs, Chemical Abortion has become a dream for them – all profit and zero liability.

Students for Life will continue sounding the alarm about the dangers of Chemical Abortion until women, babies, and even the environment are safe from its scourge.
