Most People Support a 15-Week Abortion Limit

Since the Supreme Court granted review of Mississippi’s 15-week abortion limit by adding Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to their docket, the nation is buzzing about abortion limits. Are they good? Are they bad? What does the majority believe?

Abortion groups like Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and others post on social as if all Americans believe in limitless abortion. As usual, they’re living in a fantasy world. Students for Life polling has shown:

  • More than 7 out of 10 expressed support for limits on abortion.
  • Almost HALF supported banning abortion after a heartbeat detected (usually at 3 weeks) – 47% to 38%.
  • Only 7 percent shared the position of the Democratic Party Platform – abortion without any exceptions and funded by tax dollars.

And now, Susan B. Anthony List just released their own poll results that further prove the pro-life leanings of Americans. In a June 7th press release, SBA List announced that they found that a “strong majority of voters reject abortion on demand and support limits on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.” This is great news. And as abortion groups try to paint first trimester limits as radical, it’s crucial that this type of poll is circulated. SBA concluded in their poll memo:

“These results clearly demonstrate that a majority of voters reject abortion on demand throughout pregnancy. Moreover, while the issue of abortion is a stronger motivator in deciding one’s vote for Republicans, even Independent voters side with the pro-life side of the argument, creating a strong center-right coalition. On top of this, when voters are reminded that at the 15 week mark the child can feel pain, shows significant signs of development and the risk to the mother greatly increases, our support only grows. Taken as a whole this survey shows broad support for limiting abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.”

This poll also re-confirms another point – that pro-life voters are more convicted to vote pro-life than pro-choice voters are convicted to vote pro-choice. Nearly half of us make it a key issue, while only 29% of pro-choice voters do. This is good news for legislators who prominently include pro-life values as part of their campaign.

To be clear, 15 week abortions are still abhorrent. It’s a second trimester killing of a human baby with a beating heart who is moving (possibly so much that the mother can feel him/her), opening and closing his/her fists, hiccupping, making facial expressions, and quite possibly sensitive to pain. Watch an animation of a second trimester abortion here.

Ultrasound at 15 weeks.

But a broken culture doesn’t heal overnight. This news is promising, and as our culture continues to shift, the majority opinion will keep favoring earlier and earlier abortion limits until all finally accept the humanity of the preborn from the very beginning of life.
