After scientists confirmed that drinking water for up to 20% of Americans is unsafe, Students for Life of America (SFLA) Vice President of Media & Policy Kristi Hamrick spoke the words that should come next: the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must enforce water laws to protect us from water pollution, including those often overlooked, like chemical abortion pills.
In an op-ed in The Federalist, Hamrick shared her testimony she made to the EPA, stating that the administration must specifically investigate mifepristone: the first of two drugs in the chemical abortion protocol that stops the production of the pregnancy-maintaining hormone progesterone. This pill has active metabolites that continue to work after they leave the body, including in our water.
Right now, over 50 tons of chemical abortion pollution — made up of human remains, placental tissue, and blood — are dumped into our waterways every year. As Hamrick points out, abortion vendors are defying normal procedure when they tell women to flush their abortions down the toilet.
“It is unlawful for hospital and outpatient medical facilities to dump pathological medical waste into waterways, yet this is exactly what women using abortion pills end up doing,” wrote Hamrick. “As the American Academy of Family Physicians observes, ‘Home-based health care can create medical waste which can be hazardous if not disposed of properly.’”
The voices supporting an investigation into the impacts of this problem on our water are growing. Hamrick shares the letters of 14 attorneys general, 19 members of Congress, 40 pro-family groups, physicians, and environmentalists all sounding the alarm on how these progesterone blockers in our water could be affecting the health and fertility of humans, endangered animals, and beyond.
“If you compare this to the 642,700 chemical abortions taking place each year, it’s clear that water chemical testing checks the impact of a purely federal policy — at-home use of chemical abortion pills,” wrote Hamrick.
It is time for the EPA to take this threat to our nation’s health seriously.
“You don’t have to be pro-life to want crystal-clear drinking water,” wrote Hamrick. “Since the federal government, without 60 votes in the U.S. Senate, created and then deregulated a national market for a deadly drug, we deserve to know what we are drinking.”
