California Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed into law a bill requiring every employer to conduct pro-transgender “anti-hate speech” training — including churches and religious organizations.
AB 1803 requires every California employer with five or more employees to conduct state-mandated trainings against hate speech as an addition to their sexual harassment training. A separate bill, AB 1578, requires the same of public officials.
Neither of these bills defines what constitutes “hate speech,” only requiring that employers provide trainings that address “workplace speech that vilifies, humiliates, or incites hatred against people based on the protected characteristics,” which includes gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.
Current trainings provided by the state shed light on what the state is likely to require of employers. California’s Civil Rights Department uses an anti-hate speech training for its employees that pushes transgender ideology on all who work there. The training goes so far as to say that referring to someone as their biological sex or expecting them to use the correct bathroom is harassment.
AB 1803 makes no exception for churches or religious organizations, which may not align ideologically with the required training. This raises serious questions about whether the bill violates Californians’ constitutional right to freedom of religion.
Students for Life of America (SFLA) and Students for Life Action (SFLAction) have been active in fighting the expansion of transgender ideology on college campuses. This year, SFLA launched its “Wear the Truth Week” events, sending students a free shirt that say “LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION” and “SEX IS BINARY AND UNCHANGEABLE” and resources on how to have civil discussions with their peers about the misinformation spread by gender ideologues.
California is known for its extreme positions on gender ideology. California democrats have compared keeping boys out of women’s sports to the policies of Nazi Germany and claimed that denying the placement of tampons in men’s bathrooms was “hateful” and could cause people to be “harmed.”
The Golden State is known for its radical abortion policies. California’s constitution gives a right to abortion up to viability. The state’s laws include a harsh exception that allows abortions at any point during a pregnancy for the life or health of the mother, a standard that has long been debunked as completely medically unnecessary.
States like California and its far-left politicians inspired SFLAction’s “Democrats Love Late-Term Abortion” campaign, which exposes politicians accountable for their extreme abortion views and legislative records.
