Rising infertility and dropping birth rates are a plague to the American family. As many search for solutions, there may be an undiagnosed factor: Chemical Abortion Pills in our water. 

In an op-ed at the Washington Examiner, Students for Life of America (SFLA) President Kristan Hawkins raises an important consideration for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as infertility takes over public discourse.  

“Looking for reasons, experts point fingers at everything from women working to increased stress levels to decline in support for families,” writes Hawkins. “Where they haven’t looked is in America’s water.” 

Every year, 50+ tons of chemically tainted placenta tissue, blood, and human remains are flushed into our waterways as women are lied to by the abortion industry about the safety of mifepristone, the pill used to starve and kill preborn children in the womb. The pregnancy-stopping active metabolites in that medication stay active when they leave the body and harm fertility, as shown by many studies. 

Since mifepristone was approved in 2001, necessary environmental testing was never conducted to see how exposure to Chemical Abortion Pills in the water could affect those who ingest it, whether it is humans, plants, or animals. Since then, the use of mifepristone has increased by more than 800%, making its effects on our country’s health a massive concern. 

“That’s horrifying on its face. But it could also be affecting America’s fertility,” writes Hawkins. “The organization I lead [Students for Life of America] is raising this with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as hearings are underway, looking at the Safe Drinking Water Act.” 

Students for Life of America has called on the EPA to track mifepristone in its water contaminants list and address the public health risks the deadly drug poses. While some pro-life leaders are addressing the issue — including 14 state attorneys general, doctors and environmentalists, and congressmen — Hawkins points out the unique responsibility of the EPA to solve it. 

“As a result of chemical abortion pill policy deregulation and the failure of the Trump Administration to enforce the Comstock Act, which would stop pill trafficking through the mail, abortion water pollution creates an increasing risk to human, animal, aquatic, and plant life, including endangered species,” writes Hawkins. “It’s long past time for the EPA to find out what’s in our water.”
