The “Safe Drinking Water Act” List of Pharmaceuticals in our Water to be Tracked Must Include the Active Metabolites in Chemical Abortion Pills to Fully Understand & Address the Abortion Water Pollution Levels Caused by Reckless Federal Policy

“The federal government has granted abortion pill pushers a de facto right to dump pathological medical waste into America’s drinking water, as more than 50 tons of chemically tainted blood, placenta tissue, and human remains are flushed into our waterways from abortions every year, and that’s if you believe the abortion industry’s speculation on the number of lives lost to the pills,” said Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins. “This review of what’s in our water by the EPA must be expanded to include Mifepristone, which acts to block progesterone, a hormone vital to us all. We are calling on the EPA to help evaluate the potential problems causes by Chemical Abortion Pill pushers whose deadly business leads to abortion water pollution that’s been ignored.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (04-16-2026) – Students for Life of America (SFLA) filed a comment this week with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calling for the potentially fertility blocking “Forever Chemicals” in the Chemical Abortion Pill to be added to the agency’s list of “contaminants of concern.” As noted in a media event recently headed by Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert Kennedy and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, a new list of possible contaminants has been released for public comment as part of a regular review under the “Safe Drinking Water Act.” This list of tracked contaminants has been updated every five years since 1998.

“SFLA asks that mifepristone be tracked, given the reasonable cause for concern that regular and ongoing exposure to a progesterone blocker is impacting public health, endangered species, and the environment,” says SFLA’s comment. “You don’t have to be pro-life to want clean drinking water. You don’t have to be pro-life to be concerned that we are being ‘microdosed’ by progesterone blockers, which are a factor in rising infertility.”

The three-step process of creating the contaminants list involves creating a large list of known contaminants before organizing them based on current health information and their presence in the water. Experts in the EPA are then consulted to select contaminants of particular concern to be placed on the list.

With more than 50 tons of Chemical Abortion Pill pollution being dumped into our waterways every year, SFLA called on the EPA to take seriously the affects these hormone-blocking drugs could be having on public fertility, especially after America’s fertility rate hit a record low in 2025.

This is a risk the government has historically ignored.

“When the FDA made significant changes to the Mifepristone regimen labeling and REMS in 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2023, and approved a new generic in 2025, the agency failed to conduct any CWA review,” says SFLA’s comment. “This failure flies in the face of the CWA and must be corrected immediately — especially considering the FDA’s removal of the in-person dispensing requirement, which opened up the floodgates to home use and disposal of Mifepristone directly into our nation’s water supply. No one is examining whether this policy is a disaster for those human beings, fish, wildlife, and nature exposed down the line.”

Regarding wildlife, SFLA calls out the FDA’s failure to evaluate the harm Chemical Abortion Pill pollution may have on endangered species in accordance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

“[I]n instances where an adverse effect is likely, the ESA requires a “formal consultation” between the FDA and the Services wherein the FDA would submit further documentation to the services and provide a full biological opinion on the impact, in this case of Mifepristone, would have on any listed species or habitats,” says the comment. “Beyond this, the FDA would be required to show Mifepristone would not jeopardize, destroy, or adversely affect listed species or habitats, and if it does, then either seek an exemption or provide for reasonable and prudent Alternatives.”

SFLA also cites its peer-reviewed water testing, which found that mifepristone’s sterilizing Forever Chemicals were not only present in the water, but exceeded the EPA’s own Maximum Contaminant Level that measures at what point water contaminants become harmful to public health.

“Not only have studies in other countries and the United States shown the presence of containments of concern, but SFLA’s own study illustrates that when it comes time for next steps—to create a protocol for tracking this pharmaceutical contamination—there is a framework available,” said SFLA.

“SFLA looks forward to working alongside the EPA to provide comment and support for adding mifepristone—by any name—and its active metabolites to on-going tracking, in light of the mandate found in the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, and the incredible body of law and policy designed to protect all life, human, animal, aquatic, and plant, which rely on clean water to survive and thrive.”

SFLA has collected more than 1700 comments from the public to send to the EPA demanding the EPA take action on dangerous Chemical Abortion Pill pollution in our water to protect our fertility and the lives of preborn children and their mothers.

PLG includes Students for Life Action, a 501c4, along with its 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America. Together, these organizations make up America’s largest pro-life youth organization. The PLG manages a grassroots political and policy operation engaging Americans of all ages but with a special emphasis on the largest segment of voters — the youth vote. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, VA, PLG/SFLA/SFLAction serves more than 1,600 groups on middle school, high school, college, medical, and law school campuses in all 50 states. Our team has more conversations with this generation targeted by the abortion lobby than any other pro-life operation in the world. Each week, we reach more than 10 million accounts across social media platforms and average 6 million video views. The organization’s CEO, Kristan Hawkins, hosts a bi-weekly, informative podcast, The Kristan Hawkins Show. In addition to SFLA/SFLAction, PLG leads multiple initiatives to lead and serve the future of the pro-life movement, including the Campaign for Abortion Free Cities, Standing With You, and the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement.
