Smashing and Trashing in the Sunshine State: Cemetery of the Innocents Gets Vandalized, But that Won’t Stop the Pro-Life Generation from Reaching the Youth

When there’s no logic left, some abortion enthusiasts turn to vandalism, which is what happened in the sunshine state of Florida.

Vandals trashed a Cemetery of the Innocents set up by Students for Life at the University of Florida. Florida Regional Coordinator Kristen Wayne was on the ground when students stepped on the Cemetery of the Innocents and broke the crosses. Students for Life of America (SFLA) and Wayne submitted the proper permits.

“We turned around when we heard the sound of breaking wood to see a male student stomping on our crosses,” said Katie Yarborough, president of Students for Life at UF and SFLA student spokesperson. “When we asked him why he was doing this, he responded by saying it was ‘free dopamine.’”

Yarborough took a video of the student running through the display, stepping on crosses and kicking them over, even saying he thought the display was just “hopscotch.”

“It is very disheartening to see this type of behavior on my own campus,” said Yarborough.  “He was willing to destroy our display but not willing to have a conversation about what we were actually out there doing, which is defending the lives of the preborn.”

In early April, the Florida Supreme Court allowed two decisions to come before voters this November. Amendment Four will significantly impact legalized abortion in Florida, which states that, “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.”

This amendment would allow preborn babies to be aborted up to 24 weeks, which is about five and a half months. SFLAction and SFLA are active in Florida as this amendment is up for vote in November, and as SFLAction President Kristan Hawkins continues her “No Abortion, No Exceptions” tour, our billboard truck will be perusing Florida campuses.

It turns out, some abortion zealots can’t emotionally handle seeing a display which represents millions of innocent deaths taken. It’s not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. To name a few:

The list goes on. Some pro-abortion advocates find it easier to destroy, steal, and mock rather than have intelligent and thought-provoking conversations.

“It is very disheartening to see this type of behavior on my own campus,” said Yarborough.  “He was willing to destroy our display but not willing to have a conversation about what we were actually out there doing, which is defending the lives of the preborn.”

The Cemetery of the Innocents serves more purpose than displaying the preborn lives lost, which is important, but also start a conversation and change minds. It’s not just a fun phrase – it’s something we do regularly. SFLA student leaders went door knocking and changed 17 minds for the pro-life movement. SFLA spokesperson Lydia Taylor is the president of Campbell University’s SFLA chapter and together, have changed 300 minds. Last year, SFLA released a press release showing the power of SLFA’s presence:

“When asked about efforts to ‘Codify Roe,’ we saw a dramatic shift from support FOR to OPPOSITION when the voters were told about what that meant – abortion through all 9 months, taxpayer funded, for any reason, and prohibiting health and safety standards in the 50 states.

After they learned more, young voters changed their minds and the math flipped by 15 points as 37% supported ‘Codifying Roe’ after learning more, down from 52%. Those opposing “Codifying Roe” rose from 22% to 47% — a 25-point shift, made possible in part as 26% undecided fell to 16%. “

The younger generation is catching on, and a couple of vandals can’t stop the momentum of the pro-life movement.

“It’s not going to stop because our voices are so loud,” Wayne accurately stated in a social media post. “People are noticing it and trying to shut us down. And we’re not going to stand for that. So please support us our efforts and continue to stand for life.”

SFLA filed a police report and is working with campus police to resolve this issue and investigate.
