“News that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has listened to the voices of thousands of Americans worried about the levels of fertility-crushing pharmaceuticals in the water is a victory for common sense. You don’t have to be pro-life to want crystal-clear drinking water,” said Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins. “For almost a year now, Students for Life spearheaded a grassroots campaign calling for water testing, as the deregulation of chemical abortion pills and the failure to enforce the ‘Comstock Act’ means that abortion water pollution exists nationwide. Three Democratic Presidents caused this problem, and we need the Trump Administration to fix it.”

WASHINGTON D.C. (09-11-2026) – Students for Life of America (SFLA) President Kristan Hawkins celebrated the news that the EPA was launching “cutting-edge scientific study into potential pollutants in drinking water” as a “brilliant move to make since tons of pathological medical waste from chemical abortions are being dumped each year into our water.” The EPA noted that the “novel study will look for a broad range of chemicals to better understand the occurrence of emerging contaminants in drinking water. EPA’s screening library includes 1,400 emerging contaminants, including: 1,000+ pesticides and pesticide metabolites; 250+ pharmaceuticals and personal care products; 70+ PFAS; and other emerging contaminants.” In a news release, the EPA notes, “The agency’s new study complements existing ‘Safe Drinking Water Act’ programs being implemented by EPA.”

On that list are mifepristone — the first of the two drugs used to commit an abortion, which blocks progesterone needed to sustain a pregnancy — and misoprostol, which causes contractions to expel a baby, ending an innocent life. As a result of recklessly deregulated chemical abortion pill policy, more than 50 tons of chemically tainted blood and placenta tissue, along with human remains, and mifepristone-poisoned feces and urine, goes into America’s water systems each year.

“While we are still working for mandated, on-going testing, this scientific study is an exciting first step,” said Hawkins. “The loss of life from chemical abortion pills begins with babies killed in the womb and sometimes even extends to their mothers. Abusers and pill pushers, an emerging abortion cartel, love the quick sale of deadly pills, but the fallout may go even further as women trying to get pregnant and endangered species suffer from endocrine disruptors in our drinking water. This testing is vital to determine water safety.”

SFLA has filed citizen petitions to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calling for the pills to go back to the drawing board, in light of the harms to babies and their mothers, but also because of the FDA’s failures to follow environmental laws, such as the “Endangered Species Act” (ESA). SFLA has also filed amicus briefs in cases against the FDA because of the administration’s lack of compliance with the ESA.

Importantly, SFLA has spearheaded the effort to demand that mifepristone be included in mandatory water testing under the “Safe Drinking Water Act,” gathering thousands of comments, testifying before the EPA multiple times, and building consensus. Following our lead, 19 members of Congress and 14 U.S. attorneys general filed comments to the EPA also asking for mifepristone to be added to the list.

A recent peer-reviewed study found that where water was tested, mifepristone pollutants were found.

They wrote: “Neither hospitals nor brick-and-mortar abortion vendors may legally flush medical waste into our wastewater. Failure to handle medical waste properly can be prosecuted. But by expanding abortion-by-mail into dorms, apartments and homes across America, Biden’s FDA allows that to occur as mothers having an abortion are encouraged to sit on their toilets and flush the “pregnancy tissue” i.e. chemically tainted blood, placenta tissue and their deceased child down the drain.”
