As the 2023-2024 academic year ends, Students for Life of America (SFLA) will be awarding groups with Best New Group, Best High School Group, Best College Group, and Best Standing With You Group distinctions – and you get to help us choose which groups deserve these awards. Coogs for Life at the University of Houston (UH) in Texas is nominated for Best College Group of the Year. Learn more about this group below and decide whether they’ll receive your vote:
Coogs for Life has engaged in many events. From joining life chains and celebrating victories like the Dobbs decision to hosting game nights, movie nights, and a pro-life picture day, this group constantly finds creative ways to engage and educate their peers. They hosted speakers from organizations like Texas Right to Life, Gratia Plena Counseling, and New Life Adoptions on many topics including abortion malpractice cases.
Their commitment extends beyond campus borders and has made a tangible impact on their community. They made care packages for expecting mothers, volunteered at Downtown Pregnancy Center, prayed outside Planned Parenthood, and attended events like the Texas Right to Life Gala and the March of the Surviving Youth. They also hosted Houston Coalition for Life for sidewalk advocacy training. Their work isn’t just about UH, Houston, or Texas, but the nation’s future.
When faced with a satanic pro-abortion statue at their school, they didn’t hesitate to act. They rallied the pro-life community, organized protests, and invited speakers to bring awareness. Their first rally reached an attendance of around 200 people from across the nation! Their resilience and proactive approach earned them admiration and respect. Since the reversal of Roe v. Wade, their recurring Voice for Life rallies allowed hundreds of people to engage in the pro-life cause and are an inspiration for the pro-life community. It is one thing to preserve life and another to help it prosper, but taking a stand like the Coogs for Life has, is imperative for both.
Their response to adversity and willingness to confront the culture of death head-on, exemplify their commitment to standing up for the vulnerable and defending the sanctity of life. The rallies they organized in protest of the satanic pro-abortion statue ended up costing them $1,700 in security charges, which threatened their ability to host events and accomplish other goals this semester. Despite these trials and being mocked for their beliefs, they persevered through hardship.
As they look forward to next semester, Coogs for Life plans on fundraising for a pregnant and parenting student scholarship and they will undoubtedly continue to be a driving force for change in their community and beyond. Their passion, resilience, and unwavering dedication inspire us all.
