Elin Barger, one of the National Leaders Collective’s leaders of the month, is a Students for Life of America William Wilberforce Fellow attending Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL. Learn more about Barger’s activism below.
I am involved in the pro-life movement because I felt a calling to advocate for preborn babies through nursing care within Pregnancy Centers. Abortion is the leading human injustice of our generation, and I feel convicted to be a part of the movement to end abortion in my lifetime! This movement has pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to become more confident and knowledgeable about my beliefs.
I have been a part of National Honors Society and a member of the leadership program during my dual enrollment in high school at Florida Gulf Coast University. Currently, I am a member of the William Wilberforce Fellowship, and I joined to grow in my leadership skills and become more adept at leading a student group through fundraising, event planning, and more.
Since joining the fellowship, my group has hosted many events, recruited new members, and volunteered to create impact. Firstly, we hosted multiple tabling events on campus, including the Chemical Abortion Hurts Tour. With the help of our Regional Coordinator, we were able to set up a display that sparked conversations and raised awareness about the dangers of chemical abortions.
We also focused our efforts this year toward recruiting more members, which resulted in nearly doubling event and meeting attendance! From this, we have had over 50 conversations with students about abortion and fetal development.
Lastly, we invited our Community Pregnancy Center on campus to educate students on local pregnancy and women’s health resources. The Pregnancy Center made students aware of alternatives to the abortion industry and Planned Parenthood.
I have grown so much in my leadership this year with the William Wilberforce Fellowship, and I have been so blessed to have so many wonderful mentors and supporters from Students for Life to walk with me through all my troubles and triumphs!
