Health insurance providers are being exposed for using your money to commit abortions.

A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that insurance plans may be using your money to fund abortion in violation of federal law.

GAO reported:

Under federal law, insurance plans offered in health insurance exchanges—known as qualified health plans (QHP)—may cover abortion services consistent with federal and state laws. Based on federal law applicable in 2026, QHPs are prohibited from using federal funds, such as income-based tax credits, to help pay for abortion services except where the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or the life of the pregnant woman would be endangered unless an abortion is [committed]. GAO refers to services that do not meet that exception as “non-excepted abortion services.”

The GAO office found that 26% of QHPs covered non-excepted abortion services despite this rule, along with potential inconsistencies with other federal requirements. GAO found that the violations were mostly in states that “restricted or required” QHPs to cover non-excepted abortion services.

Given that around 19 million people were enrolled in QHPs in 2026, millions of Americans may be funding abortions without realizing it.

This report was released just before the 50^th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment first taking effect. While the Hyde Amendment protects Americans from having their federal tax dollars fund non-excepted abortion services through Medicaid, that hasn’t stopped far-left politicians from finding ways to abuse the system. These efforts range from using state tax dollars to fund abortions through Medicaid to requiring colleges to provide abortion services or referrals.
