Here’s a term all pro-lifers need to know: In Vitro Gametogenesis, or IVG. IVG is a new frontier in the dystopian world of so-called assisted reproductive technology. Instead of helping infertile couples identify and treat underlying causes, millions of dollars are poured into manufacturing children like products sold to the highest bidders.

Surrogacy, sperm donors, IVF, and now IVG. There seems to be no end to how much we will manipulate biology and trample the rights of human beings to manufacture children outside the marital act.

What is IVG?

“Gametogenesis” refers to the creation of a gamete. A refresher on middle school biology: You need a male gamete (sperm) and a female gamete (egg) to make a new baby human.

Gametogenesis happens naturally in our bodies, but researchers are making “progress” creating gametes in labs using cells from skin, blood, and more. OHSU, or Oregon Health and Science University, has been experimenting with IVG. They’ve been creating egg gametes using human skin cells and then fertilizing them to create babies.

But the children don’t survive because the eggs these scientists are creating with skin cells are not good. As with all research of this nature, human beings are the collateral damage.

According to Oregon Right to Life

On Tuesday, September 30, OHSU announced that researchers “accomplished a unique proof of concept to treat infertility by turning skin cells into eggs capable of producing early human embryos.”

The published research resulted in the creation of 82 early human lives through a process of transplanting “the nucleus of a skin cell into an egg, or oocyte, stripped of its own nucleus,” then fertilizing it with sperm using IVF.

Did you catch that? These researchers have killed at least 82 innocent human beings, all in the name of scientific progress.Oregon Right to Life continued:

According to OHSU, the majority of the fertilized oocytes (zygotes) “did not progress beyond the 4-8 cell stage and displayed chromosomal abnormalities.” Just 9% developed to the blastocyst stage, and “none were cultured beyond that point.”

If such research continues, it will pave the way for in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), enabling the creation of new human beings in laboratories using skin cells, including the skin cells of more than two parents.

Why Are People Pursuing IVG at All?

Some heterosexual adults’ gametes aren’t viable; they may use IVG as part of their IVF process. For gay couples, who biologically cannot conceive a child naturally, IVG opens a new can of worms.

Right now, gay couples pursuing IVF to purchase a child must choose one partner’s gamete to use in the IVF process since both one male and one female gamete is required and same-sex couples do not have one of each between them. The other gamete in these situations comes from an egg or sperm donor. So only one partner and their gamete donor are related to the child.

With IVG, it may become possible for a child to be genetically related to two men and no mother. Right now, there is no technology to create a sperm cell from a woman’s body, so this would only work for two males.

Three Reasons IVG Should be Stopped

1. It’s an affront to Women’s Health: As we’ve discussed extensively in recent episodes, the medical industry prioritizes research on creating human life in vitro instead of diagnosing and treating the underlying health conditions that prevent women from conceiving naturally.

2. Children Are Being Killed: More children are killed in IVF than by abortion each year. IVG is increasing that death toll. No pro-lifer should stay silent on IVF and IVG — these are human rights issues. The children discarded in IVF demand our voice, as do the women exploited by surrogacy (see Episode 35 for more on that).

3. IVG Creates New Human Rights Violations: IVG is creating a market for new human rights violations. It will take “designer baby” culture to a new level, focused on adult whims and disregarding children’s rights. IVG and IVF further dehumanize preborn children in a world that already ignores their humanity.

The abortion industry taught us to talk about babies as “fetuses,” “products of conception,” and “contents of the uterus.” These are euphemisms to distance us from the reality of killing an innocent human child.

Now, reproductive technology reduces children to ingredients in experiments. IVF calls them “blastocysts,” “embryos,” and “fetuses” whose fates are to be “frozen,” “discarded,” or “selectively reduced” – all euphemisms for being killed or put on ice for an uncertain future. Read the Nature Journal study on the new IVG research at OHSU and see firsthand the cold language describing the manipulation of human life as mere science.

What About Ethics Oversight?

You might say, “Just add ethical oversight.” But that already exists, and it’s meaningless. The Nature journal closes with an “Ethics Statement” claiming compliance with state guidelines set by the Oregon Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee. But a policy cannot fix unethical research. The research itself is the problem.

The solution is to STOP.
