A new peer-reviewed water study found mifepristone and its equivalents in America’s waterways. Now, one of the scientists who conducted the study is telling the FDA to take these findings seriously.

In an op-ed in the Washington Examiner, Dr. Elise Rose detailed the findings of her and Dr. Michael Varveris’s study “Anti-Progesterone in Environmental Water” published in Issues in Law and Medicine in July 2026.

Despite what detractors claim, the results were clear: mifepristone and its equivalents were found in our waterways, and they were detected in active forms that could affect those who drink the water.

“Our peer-reviewed study was a preliminary screening, testing water upstream and downstream of wastewater treatment plants, and tap water, in three U.S. cities,” wrote Dr. Rose. “We found anti-progesterone activity (mifepristone and mifepristone equivalents) in the water in eight of the nine water conditions we sampled.”

The amounts found raise massive red flags. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) becomes concerned when forever chemicals like mifepristone are found to be above 4.0 parts per trillion in our drinking water. The study found mifepristone and its equivalents at levels as high as 41 parts per trillion.

With 50+ tons of chemical abortion pill pollution including blood, placental tissue, human remains, and human waste entering our waterways each year, this number is horrifying, but no shock.

With the FDA stalling a review of mifepristone’s safety standards, Dr. Rose argues the effects of drinking this water every day must be taken more seriously.

“Moreover, if mifepristone or its metabolites are present in the water, women could be continually microdosing themselves for years,” wrote Dr. Rose. “Even if she never wants to get pregnant again, the drug would be a progesterone antagonist, causing all kinds of health problems.”

Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone that helps start and maintain pregnancy. Blocking this hormone can open people up to infertility and other health issues. This is not only true of women, but for children and men who also require the hormone to maintain everything from fertility to nerve function.

In this op-ed, Dr. Rose tells a clear truth: you do not have to be pro-life to want crystal clear water. You just have to value your health.
