ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: FDA, We Want ANSWERS on the Chemical Abortion Pill Review

Last October, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins sent a letter to Trump administration officials.

The letter — addressed to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, then-Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary, and then-U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi — made one simple request: conduct a review of the Chemical Abortion Pill mifepristone.

“During the 2024 Presidential campaign, the two big asks SFLAction discussed with the Trump Administration was a call to cut federal support for abortion vendors and to end the lawless distribution and negligent support of Chemical Abortion Pills,” wrote Hawkins. “But because of the life-and-death stakes for preborn children, their mothers, and the environment, the assessment must go back to the beginning.”

Hawkins detailed the potential harms of the more than 50 tons of chemically tainted blood, placenta tissue, and human remains that are being flushed into our waterways thanks to Chemical Abortion Pills.

As Hawkins pointed out, no state is safe. Despite the restrictions of the Comstock Act, which bans mailing of abortion materials, Chemical Abortion Pills are being shipped into states with pro-life laws. Instead, Blue states are openly disrespecting the laws and officeholders of pro-life states by “shielding” criminal abortion vendors who mail illegal pills.

These issues cannot be addressed without the Trump Administration’s involvement in a thorough and purposeful review.

Hawkins wrote:

Without 60 votes in the U.S. Senate, three Democratic Party Presidents forced Chemical Abortion Pills on the market and then deregulated them. The Risk Evaluation and Mitigations Strategies (REMS) recommended don’t reflect current realities, including possible environmental harms and the empowerment of abusers who have taken advantage of No Test, Online Distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills.

The Pro-Life Generation’s concern: This review will fail unless a thorough, original investigation takes place, rather than a rubber stamping of past analysis. This review will fail if, at the end of the process, the U.S. government merely supersizes the warning label. This review will fail without a study of the risks of abortion water pollution. This review will fail if abusers continue to have easy access to Chemical Abortion Pills, using them against mothers without their knowledge or consent. This review will fail if the Justice Department does not weigh in on violations of the Comstock Act as well as the blatant disregard of the laws of pro-life states by their abortion-loving neighbors.

Despite months passing, these obvious concerns have yet to be addressed. EPA Commissioner Lee Zeldin even claimed he’d never heard of the issue despite Hawkins and many others bringing it to the EPA’s attention

Now, both Marty Makary and Pam Bondi have departed their offices, and the end of Louisiana’s court case against Chemical Abortion Pills is rapidly approaching — placing the burden squarely on the incoming administrators to answer the pro-life movement’s call to review the Chemical Abortion Pill mifepristone.

If the administration can fast-track the review of psychedelic drugs at President Trump’s command, why can’t they review the safety of a drug that is designed to kill with every dose?

The Pro-Life Generation wants answers. And they are answers only the administration can give.
