Usually, when someone justifies ending an innocent life, coldly embracing the horrors of evil, it’s condemned for the hellish act it is. Until, for The New Yorker, that purveyor of death is an abortionist who was treated as a rock star instead of the Devil’s stand-in as part of an in-depth conversation with a man who admits he kills for a living.

As Americans grapple with the existence, frequency, and legality of late-term abortion and infanticide in the United States, Jia Tolentino of the New Yorker gathered the information straight from the source – one of America’s long-standing, late-term abortionists, Dr. Warren Hern.

In his scrubs and sitting in an unremarkable office space, Tolentino painted the picture of what seemed like an ordinary older man in his 80s nearing retirement. C.S. Lewis, in God on Dock, observed that evil can be all the sneakier by appearing benign, writing: “If devils exist, their first aim is to give you an anesthetic — to put you off your guard. Only if that fails, do you become aware of them.” (emphasis added)
Tolentino seemed “off her guard” as she commended Hern for his patience, desensitized to the evil of a man who, in his most recent memoir, “methodically walks the reader through what late abortions can entail: dismemberment of the fetus; intentional cranial collapse,” (emphasis added) according to Tolentino.

HERN CAN’T GET HIS JUSTIFICATION STRAIGHT
Hern tries to push two ideas in conflict, simultaneously undermining his own pitch. Hern claims that late-term abortion is necessary and should be allowed if a baby has fatal, or even survivable, health conditions or if the mother’s life is at risk. However, he also thinks abortion should be elective, available basically to all – except those he doesn’t like. Hern is quite clear that if you make him mad, he’s out.
But in his own words: “All abortions are elective, and all abortions are therapeutic.”
So which one is it? Is abortion only for “extreme” health circumstances or because a woman would instead abort her child to pursue a career?

This is called abortion on demand. Look at Hern contradicting the “health of the baby and life of the mother” abortion reasoning later in his interview:
“My head counsellor was counselling a young woman from Texas, age twenty-one, from a minority group, well-educated and thoughtful. The pregnancy would make it impossible for her to set out on her chosen course in life. My counsellor remarked to me that this young woman was ‘at the precipice of adulthood.’ This is a succinct and perceptive metaphor for the condition of many of our patients.” (emphasis added)
But the hellish mental gymnastics doesn’t stop there. Despite being a late-term abortionist, he hardly wants to admit that abortion due to a potentially fatal fetal condition is actually abortion.
“Do you want to call that an abortion?” asks Hern regarding an eight-month-long pregnancy. “I don’t…It was an interruption of a pregnancy that was hopelessly complicated.”
An abortion doesn’t cease to be one based on reasoning. If it is an intentional killing of a preborn life through dismemberment or starvation, it’s an abortion. Hern knows the truth, so he has to lie or cast doubt as the devil did in the Garden of Eden.
FACT CHECK: Wondering if Hern’s business model can be confirmed? We called to prove the point of his operation in Colorado. To no surprise, they eagerly offered late-term abortion and walked SFLA Spokesperson Lydia Taylor through the horrific process.

HERN LIES ABOUT WHAT AN ABORTION IS
The article notes a story Hern tells in his book. The memoir begins with a description of a pregnant patient whose placenta had separated from the wall of the uterus, causing the swift death of the fetus.” By definition, that means any procedure that followed was not intentional abortion.
That kind of smoke screen continues as Hern and the author try to conscript many women into their abortion camps. The writer lumps together “late abortion, a late miscarriage, a stillbirth, a spontaneous early delivery that ends in a baby who dies” in the category of abortion.

Hern replies: These are not separate events. It is a spectrum. It is a continuum. There are elements of each of these events in all of the others …”
No, actually, they are not. The purpose of abortion is to end a life in the womb – not as a consequence of trying to save a life and being unable to save two people, but as the goal. If a child has died, that is not an abortion – and a man who kills preborn life knows that. Trying to pull women’s grief over lost children into this article was offensive.

HERN WON’T HELP PEOPLE HE DOESN’T LIKE
When asked if he’s ever turned down patients, he replied he has when a potential patient threatens violence against him. So, if patients threaten his life, he won’t kill their child.
He wants to pick his cases. “You write that a woman cannot walk into your office and demand an abortion. You can, but I’m not going to do it.”
HERN ADMITS THAT THE TERM “VIABILITY” IS FAKE
The abortionist pushes for abortion without limits and for adding it into the U.S. Constitution as drawing a line at when a child can live outside the womb doesn’t give him all the legal permission he wants. Hern says, “The idea of replacing Roe v. Wade is hopeless, because it has these poison pills in it that say we can regulate abortion after viability. What is viability, exactly? What is the definition of viability? If the woman’s life is at risk, the viability of the fetus is irrelevant.”
HERN MAKES UP FACTS ABOUT ABORTION DATA
There is no National Abortion Reporting Law in America. All abortion data comes from the voluntary statements of abortionists themselves and a little state reporting. Some places, like California, report nothing at all despite their anointing themselves as an “abortion sanctuary state.” And yet Hern makes comparisons of abortion data (sloppy, inaccurate, or unavailable) with birth data. It’s an impossible comparison as the data does not exist. Forget looking for an apples-to-apples comparison; it’s a kind of parallel between unicorns and horses. One is fake, and one is real.
That didn’t stop the abortionist from claiming abortion is a “safe” purchase, saying: “The basic fact is that if you’re pregnant, you’re at risk of dying from that pregnancy. It doesn’t matter whether you’re happy about being pregnant. If having the abortion at any point in pregnancy is between fifteen and twenty times safer than carrying the pregnancy to term, what is the possible justification for forcing a woman to continue the pregnancy if she doesn’t want to?”
EVEN HERN THINKS THE DISTRIBUTION OF CHEMICAL ABORTION PILLS AS PERMITTED BY THE DEMOCRATS IS DANGEROUS
But what does one of the most well-known abortionist think about the rush to push life-ending pills by mail, and without medical oversight? Regarding the lack of safeguards around Chemical Abortion Pills, which cause infertility, injury, and death, he asked honest questions:“ My issue with medication abortion is—is there a follow-up exam?” Hern continued. “Do you know if the uterus is empty or not? Who’s going to take care of them if there’s a complication? Because of political oppression, people are afraid to take care of the patient.”

FOR A DOCTOR, HERN SEEMS REMARKABLY IGNORANT OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Hiding his head in the sand, or perhaps afraid to admit he skipped that day in biology class, Hern tries to dodge the humanity of the child at risk: “Who knows when the fertilization occurs? Is it when the sperm enters the ovum? Is it when it forms a blastocyst? When it attaches to the wall of the uterus? What if it’s in the fallopian tube—an ectopic pregnancy, which can be a fatal problem [and cannot result in a child]? There’s a thing called a hydatidiform mole—it results from a fertilized egg, but it’s a tumor that looks like a bunch of white grapes. Is it a person?”
The interview was meant to paint him as a compassionate doctor graciously giving women late-term abortions. Instead, it exposed him for what he is: a merciless, unrepentant abortionist, profiting from the death of the preborn and pain of women.
