On a recent episode of the ‘Speak Out’ podcast with Christine Yeargin powered by Students for Life of America (SFLA), Yeargin was joined by Jep and Jessica Robertson, stars of the infamous Duck Dynasty reality show and now show Duck Family Treasure, to share how they decided to adopt their son.
Jep and Jessica already had four kids when they decided to pursue adoption, which had been a dream of Jessica’s – to have five kids.
“When we were dating, Jess said she wanted to have five kids, and I was like, that’s a lot of kids,” Jep explained to Yeargin. “But she was very adamant, and then we had four, and she couldn’t have any more kids, and she wanted to adopt and was like no.”
Before that, though, Jep was initially hesitant. With four kids under his roof, he thought they had enough. His mind soon changed when he took an out-of-country mission trip to the Dominican Republic and visited his church’s orphanage. He described it as “the most awesome thing” and thought about how he could take all the kids home with him. His heart was pricked, and when he returned, he agreed with Jessica to adopt domestically.
Though the process was difficult and required patience, Jep and Jess were unexpectedly matched with their son and are grateful for God’s timing—not only God’s timing but also the picture that adoption paints for Christians and the world.
“It’s a really awesome way to see that we’re adopted sons and daughters of God,” shared Jep. When you actually adopt, you see that story, and it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, that makes so much more sense now’ when you adopt and how God adopts us. It’s really cool.”
Jules “Gus” Augustus, Jep and Jessica’s son was adopted as a baby and has been a part of the family since 2016. Jessica wrote how Gus changed and molded their family’s hearts in a 2017 blog post:
“We took him home four days after he was born and have loved every single moment with him. The crazy thing about adoption is that we wanted to help mold and love this boy and teach him every good thing our parents taught us. But, in the end, he has and is still teaching us every day about love and what life is truly all about. We want to love God, and love people, and adoption is the perfect way to put that into practice. “
“I would adopt again in a heartbeat,” Jessica told Yeargin. “I would never feel like I have enough kids because I always see…love any child as my own.”
In addition to unpacking their adoption story, Jep and Jessica Robertson talk about their new show, Duck Family Treasure, and the heart behind their latest children’s book venture with BRAVE Books, “Dear Valor,” which holds traditional Christian values.
