Today, there’s a culture of death spreading across America. Radical leftists continue to chip away at the very foundation of society by pushing — and often succeeding in passing — bills to expand “assisted suicide,” death by mail, and more.
But in a culture that increasingly glorifies taking one’s own life or the lives of others, there’s one kind of death that society seems content to leave buried under the rug: miscarriage.
“Today, miscarriage seems a taboo topic in American society,” writes Students for Life Action’s own Lane Koch in an op-ed published at The Hill last week. “Most women, and certainly most men, know almost nothing about either the experience itself or the resources available, unless they have undergone it themselves.”
“That was certainly true for my husband and me.”
In the op-ed, Koch describes her and her husband’s miscarriage experience: how they found out at 14 weeks that their baby would not survive, how they prayed for a miracle, how the hospital pressured her to get surgery to remove the baby, and how they received no information, support, or resources whatsoever.
“One of the most emotionally difficult parts of the experience was the complete lack of support offered to my husband and me,” writes Koch. “There was no system or kit provided, and no information about burial options. To me, that was stunning. If a doctor in my Catholic hospital could offer me abortion resources, she could — and should — have offered resources to nonprofits and ministries that help mothers who are facing infant loss.”
Something needs to change, writes Koch. “These experiences illustrate the need for a federal ‘Bereaved Parents’ Rights Act,’ which would require grieving parents receive information about the support available to them.”
Helping grieving parents shouldn’t be partisan. It’s time to pass a law that will truly support parents suffering one of the most unimaginable losses possible.
