While the Oscar’s award shows ratings have dramatically dipped every year, usually there are a few standout moments that go viral, for better or for worse. This year, it was refreshing to see an actor, Kieran Culkin, humorously pro-family instead of praising preborn slaughter as a pathway to gain success.

When it comes to family, celebrities have been known to take the pro-abortion stance, much to the twisted applause of a rich and famous crowd. During the 2020 Golden Globes, actress Michelle Williams passionately said that abortion saved her career, all while pregnant with her child.
“As women and as girls, things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice. I’ve tried my best to live a life of my own making, and not just a series of events that happened to me,” said Williams. “… And I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose. To choose when to have my children and with whom.”

Of course, “choice” is a euphemism for killing a preborn child, but even with everyone clapping, and Busy Phillips tearing up, the statement was wildly dystopian and dark, not to mention demeaning to women. After all, if women are strong, which they are, they can have children and be successful and thrive. But Oscar winner Kieran Culkin took a different direction with his acceptance speech in what even Slate admitted was the “best part of the Oscar season.”
After accepting his award, he excitedly went to the mic to ask his blushing wife for a fourth child through a touching story.
“About a year ago, I was on a stage like this and I, very stupidly, publicly said that I want a third kid from her because she said if I won the award, I would, she would give me the kid,” said Culkin. “It turns out she said that because she didn’t think I was gonna win, but then people came up to her and were like, you know, really annoying her, I think, I think it got to her, but anyway.”
He continued. “She goes, ‘Oh God, I did say that. I guess I owe you a third kid,’ and I turned to her and I said, ‘Really I want four.’ And she turned to me, I swear to God this happened, it was just over a year ago, she said, ‘I will give you four when you win an Oscar.’ I held my hand out, she shook it and I have not brought it up once until just now.”

This is a far cry from other Oscar speeches praising abortion, which normally cause controversary among the American population. Notice however, that a pro-family speech such as Culkin’s hardly divides. It inspires others. It seems that, whether you’re pro-life or pro “choice,” there’s something unifying and touching about a man who loves his wife and wants to raise children with her.
If both Slate and Fox News can agree on Culkin’s touching speech about his wife, publications on two separate sides of the cultural spectrum, perhaps there’s something deep inside all of us that sees the good in a strong husband and a loving wife devoted to creating more children. And not just creating them, but seeing them as a gift, as Culkin directly alluded to when “asking” his wife for the gift of more children.
Even the most pro-abortion crowd cheered and laughed at Culkin’s speech, because whether Hollywood will admit it or not, family will always be a winning message.
