GUEST POST: In a new episode of the Explicitly Pro-Life podcast, hosted by Students for Life of America (SFLA) President Kristan Hawkins, Hawkins responds to the recent interview of Elon Musk on the Tucker Carlson Tonight show. When asked by Carlson if there are threats to our earthly existence, Musk responds that we should never assume that civilization is in a place to sustain itself for the foreseeable future, especially considering the alarming decline in birth rates.

The United States is currently below replacement value, meaning that women are individually giving birth to less than 2.1 children, and there are simply not enough people in the next generation to make up for those who die in the previous generation. This should scare us as a society.

And what are the primary reasons for which Musk blames our lack of people (especially considering the natural urge to have sex)?

Abortion and birth control. Hawkins notes that once birth control fails and people are left with the procreative consequence, abortion is seen as the back-up contraceptive method for the “whoopsies.” The Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s research arm, also notes that approximately half of all women seeking abortions were actively using contraception.

Why should we as the Pro-Life Generation be so concerned about our population declining? Because abortion plays a huge part in this equation.
