“In case anyone watching from home isn’t clear on what the abortion lobby wants, the coming fight over the Helms Amendment should make it clear. A push for strained taxpayers to fund abortions worldwide isn’t what the vast majority of Americans want and represents the agenda of a well-funded, predatory business always seeking more money,” said SFLAction President Kristan Hawkins.

WASHINGTON D.C. (07-30-2020) – Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins called on members of the House to defend the Helms Amendment that blocks spending for abortions worldwide, with the exception of cases of rape, incest or if the mother’s life is in danger. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) introduced the “Abortion is Health Care Everywhere Act of 2020,” to open the door for taxpayer funding around the world.

“The most tone-deaf appeal that the bill sponsors make for this radical change in U.S. policy is that failing to end lives around the world is somehow ‘racist,’” said Hawkins. “In what alternate reality does paying to end the lives of people of color around the world fix the racism inherent in abortion today. Consider that the abortion lobby’s own think tank, the Guttmacher Institute, notes that, ‘the abortion rate for black women is almost five times that for white women.’ That is not the kind of reality U.S. taxpayers want to export to other countries.”

Writing about the racist roots of Planned Parenthood, Hawkins looked at how the views of Planned Parenthood’s founder continues to today in outcomes. Click here to read her column on this at USA Today.

Students for Life of America has launched the SOS: Strike Out Sanger campaign calling on pro-life Americans to demand the removal of Sanger’s statues and symbols, which represent a racist who actively targeted minority communities because she did not value their lives. That racist past must not be permitted to create a racist future in the impact of abortion in minority communities here at home or around the world.
