A recent Townhall op-ed examines Planned Parenthood’s controversial history 110 years after Margaret Sanger opened her first birth control clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn, on October 16, 1916. Today, Planned Parenthood stands as a multibillion-dollar corporate fixture in American life. Yet beneath the high-gloss public relations campaigns and the rhetoric of modern health care lies a century-old record of eugenics, population control, and racial engineering that no amount of rebranding can erase.Â
Now, as the nation marks this grim anniversary, grassroots leaders are forcing an overdue reckoning. Spearheaded by Students for Life of America (SFLA) and Students for Life Action (SFLAction), the modern pro-life movement is confronting the Abortion Goliath not merely as an ideological adversary, but as the direct institutional successor to an agenda dedicated to suppressing populations deemed “unfit.”
The historical record is neither ambiguous nor hidden. Sanger’s American Birth Control League (ABCL), founded in 1921, operated squarely within the elite American eugenics movement.
The transformation of Sanger’s radical apparatus into “Planned Parenthood” was not an ideological conversion; it was a survival strategy. The shift traded inflammatory street agitation for sanitized institutional credibility, setting the stage for decades of lucrative government subsidies.
Yet the geographic and demographic reality of Planned Parenthood’s operations has remained remarkably consistent. Today, the corporation operates over 600 facilities nationwide.
It is this ongoing legacy that Students for Life of America (SFLA) is systematically working to dismantle. Under the leadership of Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, SFLA has challenged lawmakers to confront the contradiction of sending taxpayer dollars to an enterprise founded on racial cleansing.
Defenders of Planned Parenthood in Washington and statehouses nationwide frequently drape the abortion industry in the language of civil rights. But the receipts of history tell another story. One hundred and ten years after Margaret Sanger laid the foundation, her organization continues to locate its facilities in the very communities she sought to suppress.
Thanks to the aggressive groundwork of SFLA and its coalition, lawmakers can no longer claim ignorance. The question is no longer whether Planned Parenthood’s roots are corrupt, but whether the American taxpayer will continue to foot the bill for Margaret Sanger’s darkest ambition.
