Catholic Family Lives Out the Pro-Life Message: Serving Children Through Adoption and Advocacy

Abortion supporters often accuse pro-lifers of being pro-life in speech and not in action, saying that if we were pro-life and wanted abortion illegal, we wouldn’t abandon children once they’re born. That, or pro-lifers walk the walk for political motivations only. Though maybe some politicians only care about life in the womb when it earns them votes, like the “pro-life in name only” Republicans that Students for Life Action (SFLAction) frequently calls out, truly pro-life people put their beliefs into action. The media glances over many of them.

But, in a rare instance, mainstream media outlet the Associated Press embraced the holiday spirit and highlighted a heart-warming story of giving back through adoption and advocacy. Ohio couple Erin and Mike Young dedicate their lives to living out the pro-life cause not only at the polls or on social media but in their home, adopting three children, one of whom survived a failed chemical abortion.

Their pro-life journey extends outside the home. First, they raise their children to understand the sanctity of life at conception, encourage them to be involved in the pro-life cause from a young age, and school them at home with Christian values. Additionally, they bring them to various pro-life events and teach them about supporting candidates with pro-life values. The Young family truly lives out their pro-life values and is raising their young ones to be a part of the Pro-Life Generation (PLG).

“Educating our kids why voting for leaders who honor and protect life is very important,” Erin told AP. “… power has been given back to the states. We still need to pray, and we still need to fight against the abortion laws in the state itself.”

This couple is one of many who’s adopted or fostered in line with their pro-life values, but many pro-lifers find other ways to support women who choose Life. Students for Life of America (SFLA) works to do just that. Not only educate but support, specifically through Standing With You (SWY), which offers support and resources to women who choose life, walking through post-abortion regret, or miscarriage.

More specifically, following the devastation of Hurricane Helene and Milton, Standing with You stepped up to serve and support Pregnancy Help Centers (PHC) impacted by the storm and restocking their supply rooms with diapers, wipes, and other baby essentials for mothers in need. Standing with You also collected items for pregnancy resources during its annual Mother’s Day Item Drive.

During the 2024 Summer of Service, volunteers across the country with The Campaign for Abortion Free Cities (AFC) donated baby items to young families in the neighborhood. They helped 2,100 neighbors by donating over $11,000 worth of baby items, including diapers and wipes.

Students for Life of America serves pregnant and parenting students on campus. Last year, Standing with You Group of the Year winner, Students for Life at Florida International University (FIU), collected over 11,000 diapers to support parents on campus while working personally with pregnant and parenting students, delivering baby items to their dorms, and taking them to prenatal appointments.

Being pro-life isn’t just checking boxes on election day. Though that’s also important, it’s about serving mothers and families at the grassroots level, whether in the community, neighborhood, or local college. After all, it takes a village to raise a child, and in a world where children are seen as disposable and motherhood is often despised or feared, families need our support more than ever. Whether it’s by adopting and fostering children like the Young family or supporting a local Pregnancy Help Center, the pro-life movement aims to protect life at every stage.
