Last fall, Students for Life at Christopher Newport University hosted Students for Life of America (SFLA) Student Spokesperson Lydia Taylor Davis. If you know anything about Davis, she makes quite a stir on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. We were prepared for the intense conversations and controversy of her “Abortion is Violence” tabling and speaking tour. We were, however, prepared and ready, as our group and leadership board had been working hard for weeks on end. And it paid off.
We tabled weekly for a month, engaging with students and building anticipation. We even created an eye-catching banner that hung prominently on campus for over a month. Additionally, we launched a marketing campaign through social media, email outreach, and our school’s web pages.
The night of the event, the room was packed to the brim. Over 125 students attended, filling every seat and standing shoulder to shoulder. Some students even waited outside, hoping to get in once others left. I was in shock at the turnout, fully aware of the profound impact our words and responses would have on the students in the following conversations and presentations. The night would proceed with a Q&A lasting over two hours, and the presentation would proceed for another 30 minutes, with more Q&As following.
One thing became clear: the youth are eager to discuss and come to the truth on the most important issue of our day: abortion.
Earlier that day, we had over 80 conversations during our tabling, and more than 15 students walked away with a changed perspective. Lauren Francis, secretary of Students for Life at CNU, shared her perspective with me.
“Tabling with Lydia Taylor Davis was not solely educational and engaging to those outside of our group, but she helped to inspire those within our group also,” said Francis. “She showed us an example of what being a bold pro-life woman truly entails.”
I’ll never forget when my conversation with a young woman who initially believed in abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. After a thoughtful discussion, she shifted her position, eventually saying that abortion should only be allowed in cases of rape or incest. While our goal is to see abortion abolished entirely, no matter the circumstances of a child’s conception, helping someone move away from such an extreme stance felt like a huge win.
The “abortion is violence” message was unapologetic and delivered in a bold and unwavering way by Davis, sparking the attention of everyone in the room. She initiated powerful reactions, deep reflection, and productive discussions that continued long after the event ended. Her impact on our campus got the intention of Christopher Newport University’s “Captains Log” and prompted them to write about the day’s exciting activities that caused controversy, encouraged education, and attracted counter-protesters.
The crowd drawn by Davis’ tabling and speaking tour filled me with hope. It was a powerful reminder that my generation cares deeply about the sanctity of life and is committed to carrying this fight forward. Our conversations were marked by a refreshing sense of maturity and a genuine effort to find common ground.
This collective yearning for change transforms hearts and minds. The hard work of educating campuses, as Lydia Taylor Davis and our group have done, remains the driving force behind the pro-life movement—and it’s this dedication that will continue to propel us toward meaningful and lasting change in the fight for life.
Stay tuned for upcoming SFLA tours!
