“After weeks of watching students and pro-terrorist activists seize and barricade themselves inside school buildings, and years of watching progressives allow squatters to take private property, a woman faces years in prison for blocking an abortion vendor door?” said Students for Life of America (SFLA) President Kristan Hawkins. “Justice is not blind – it’s biased in Biden’s America. The chaos that the left creates is ignored.”

WASHINGTON D.C. (05-14-2024) – One of nine pro-lifers indicted and convicted for violating the FACE (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances) Act outside of a notorious late-term abortion facility in Washington D.C. was sentenced today in what SFLA President Kristan Hawkins calls “an attempt to prioritize prosecuting pro-lifers while ignoring pro-terrorist activists.” Senior Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotely sentenced Lauren Handy to more than four years in prison. More sentencing hearings are expected this week.
“The harsh sentences facing pro-life activists is a clear indication of the Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) priorities – upholding a weaponized law while ignoring students and pro-terrorist activists’ disruption on campuses across America,” stated Hawkins. “Students for Life of America won’t be intimidated, and we’ll keep peacefully advocating for every preborn life. We will continue to advocate for the repeal of the FACE Act – a law aimed at Pro-Life Americans.”
Handy is the first of seven expected to be sentenced this week. This isn’t the first-time government agencies have turned a blind eye to real chaos and oppressed the pro-life movement by abusing the Clinton-era FACE Act. Here are a few examples, including one from an SFLA staff member:
- South Carolina man was convicted of the FACE Act for sitting in front of a Planned Parenthood entrance.
- Pro-life protestor named Mark Houck was arrested at his home in front of his children in 2022 for protesting peacefully outside of a Planned Parenthood facility.
- SFLA staff member was likewise arrested for sidewalk-chalking on a public street in front of an abortion facility in Washington D.C. in 2021. Since then, the charges against the two students have been dropped, but the free speech case against the District of Columbia continues.
