Students for Life Action Calls Newly Signed IVF Bill an “Overreaction to a Troubling Situation,” & New Data Shows Less than 1 in 10 Support the Troubled Business on Learning More

“We understand the desire to support parents hoping for a child, but it’s an overreaction to a troubling situation to allow the sometimes-sloppy Invitro Fertilization industry a get-out-of-regulation free card,” said Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins. “This law should have been rejected for its overreach. Remember how this began? An IVF business allowed someone access to three families’ dreams, which were crushed in an accident. Giving that business a free pass makes no sense.”

MONTGOMERY, A.L. (3-7-2024) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins expressed disappointment regarding the decision by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to sign HB 237, which provides civil and criminal immunity to those irresponsibly operating invitro fertilization (IVF) clinics. The proposed law was introduced as a response to a recent ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court regarding a case from multiple Alabama families who discovered the negligence of an IVF clinic. The families sued the IVF clinic under the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act.

“The polling on IVF to date is flawed for lack of complete information,” Hawkins noted. This week, Students for Life of America put out an online quiz that looked at young people’s attitudes about IVF, before and after learning more about its practices.  “Our research shows that, when presented with the realities of IVF — from discarding human embryos to genetic and gender tampering — 94% of people agree that IVF is morally problematic. This is true whether they are pro-life or not,” Hawkins said. “Even so, despite all the media statements about support for IVF, we found only about half (56%) supported IVF before learning more and that less than 1 in 10 (6%) found it morally acceptable after understanding more about the troubled industry.”

The Alabama decision doesn’t outlaw IVF, despite media rhetoric. However, the IVF clinics can now continue to operate but without further accountability to treat embryonic children as human beings, who are not discarded or carelessly handled like waste.

Data from the National Institute for Health (NIH) shows that 80% of embryos produced during IVF that are chosen for implantation fail to result in a liveborn infant. With a high failure rate, a production volume is needed to create a successful implantation, resulting in effectively “disposable” children.

SFLActionalso calls upon Members of Congress to vote against H. Res. 1043, sponsored by Rep. Mace (R-SC-1), and H. Res. 1037, sponsored by Rep. Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR-5),which would provide incidental cover for the abortion industry as well.
