Report: Late-Term Abortionist Leroy Carhart Calls it Quits in MD

In news that broke on Thanksgiving, of all days, Operation Rescue reported that late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart is no longer committing abortions at his late-term abortion facility in Maryland:

“According to local sources, Carhart’s last abortions in Maryland took place during the week of October 30, 2016. He returned to GRHS on November 8, but stayed only a few hours, sending several very late-term patients home without abortions. He left later in the afternoon and never returned.”

This is huge news and we are so grateful!

His late-term abortion facility is run out of Germantown, Maryland and it was under his care that Jennifer Morbelli, a 29-year-old teacher, died after a third trimester abortion in 2013. Ambulances have been called to his facility multiple times as well since he opened the facility in 2010.

Earlier this year, Michele Hendrickson, SFLA’s Capital Area Regional Director, attended a rare public lecture from Dr. Carhart at Johns Hopkins University. Carhart revealed he committed anywhere from 80-100K during his practice as an abortionist. Michele’s post about the talk is here.

Carhart is facing serious inquiries for botched abortions and the possible selling of baby body parts, as well as violating the Born Alive law:

“Earlier this year, a Federal lawsuit was filed against Carhart for a seriously botched late-term abortion that came close to costing the life of another one of his patients. He also faced the scrutiny of the House Select Panel on Infant Lives, which issued subpoenas to him and GRHS for documents related to the suspected trafficking of aborted baby remains and the deaths of babies who may have been born alive during abortions at the Germantown facility.”

Unfortunately, Carhart is still committing abortions in Nebraska.

Late-Term Abortion is Real

LTA is real bumper stickerAfter abortion was (finally) brought up in a presidential debate last week and Donald Trump graphically explained a late-term abortion – that the baby is “ripped out of the womb” – and Hillary Clinton retorted that late-term abortions don’t happen that often and if they do, it’s because of a fetal anomaly. The media freaked out and bolted to Clinton’s defense. They claimed she was right, that Trump was wrong, and published heartbreaking stories of women who chose to abort their babies late in the pregnancy because of a diagnosis that the child was incompatible with life.  Comedian and liberal feminist Samantha Bee took to her show “Full Frontal” with a segment that included her shouting through a megaphone that “partial-birth abortions aren’t a thing!”

But that’s not the truth. Hillary Clinton was wrong. The liberal press is wrong. Samantha Bee is wrong. Late-term abortions ARE a thing and women who choose them often don’t make that choice because of a fetal anomaly diagnosis.

Here’s the facts:

  • Roe v. Wade and its companion case, Doe v. Bolton, from the U.S. Supreme Court made abortion legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy for any reason whatsoever
  • Late-term abortions, usually defined as abortions past viability (24 weeks, although babies have survived who were born earlier) or past 20 weeks, do happen – 15,000 per year according to the Centers for Disease Control (read about abortions past 30 weeks here, testimony from a former Planned Parenthood director about late-term abortions, and the latest in a long list of botched late-term abortions).
  • Most late-term abortions are chosen for the same reasons first-term abortions are chosen. Fetal anomalies account for a small percentage of late-term abortions. A paper from the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) wrote about a study where women seeking both first-trimester and late-term abortions reported “not knowing about the pregnancy,” “trouble deciding about the abortion,” and “disagreeing about the abortion with the man involved,” with similar frequency.
  • There are five abortion facilities in the country where women can obtain abortions in the ninth month and 162 abortion facilities that do late-term abortion.
  • No medical study supports the claim that late-term abortions are necessary to save the life of the mother.
  • Partial-birth abortion, where the abortionist kills the baby as it’s legs dangle outside of the mother, was outlawed in 2003. However, the Center for Medical Progress undercover videos at least raised suspicion that some abortionists may still be doing them in order to get intact baby parts to sell. Abortionists have also devised other methods to kill viable babies late in pregnancy.
  • Late-term abortions are extremely dangerous for the mother. Kermit Gosnell sits in prison for killing babies born alive during late-term abortions as well as killing mothers. Women have died at the hands of late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart, who is currently being sued for a botched late-term abortion. Douglas Karpen, who not only killed babies born alive after abortions like Gosnell, but a 15-year-old died after an abortion from and another was seriously injured.

Please share this brief video below about late-term abortions in the United States and go to to learn more. This is a barbaric practice that kills a viable child and is dangerous for the mother.

Gosnell Movie Needs to be Shown Everywhere

By Missy Stone, National Field Director at Students for Life of America.

I don’t cry in movies. I never have. People who know me find that interesting because I am a very emotional person, so it’s surprising that my emotions aren’t triggered during moving or heart wrenching films. However, today was an exception.

I watched Gosnell.

As the movie was concluding, I stood in my kitchen and cried. Not only cried, sobbed. It was the ugly cry you’re glad no one is around to see. It’s not that I don’t know the story Gosnell movieor that I was surprised, but watching the scenes unfold made it so real. There’s a difference between hearing the stories on the news and watching a true depiction of a young girl sitting in the courtroom describing the horrors of what happened behind those doors. (The testimonies were taken directly from courtroom documents.)

Kermit Gosnell is a sociopath who killed women by botching abortions and leaving them to bleed to death or overdosing them on drugs. He delivered babies alive and then snipped their spines as they cried and put them on shelves. He had teenagers preforming medical procedures and administering anesthetics in his absence. His facility was described as a “House of Horrors” with bags of baby body parts stuffed in the refrigerator, down the garbage disposal, in glass jars in cabinets. He was documented for 211 Health Code Violations.

After multiple complaints to the health department, even one hand-delivered by another OBGYN in the area because his patients were contracting STD’s after seeing Gosnell, no one inspected his abortion facility, Women’s Health Society. And people died because of it. According to them, inspecting an abortion facility somehow infringes on women’s rights.

Pro-choice and pro-life people alike want to believe this is the exception. It’s not. Douglas Karpen and Leroy Carhart are guilty of the same atrocities. A Planned Parenthood in Delaware was recently shut down because they were not properly sterilizing equipment because it took too long and they wanted to perform as many abortions as possible. There’s no telling how many more stories are out there like this that our government officials are ignoring in the name of “protecting women’s rights.”

Gosnell is not the exception. He’s the norm. And we have to open our eyes, put our biases’ aside and accept the truth.

Will we let people be silent about abortion because they don’t want to offend people? People will die. Will we let people personally believe abortion is wrong but not want to take away a women’s right to choose? People will continue to die. Will we let people protect their precious abortion at the expense of health standards, sterile facilities, and women’s lives? People will keep dying.

We have to get the word out that this is the abortion industry. They are about business, not women’s rights.

Every woman has the right to go into a medical facility and come out without an STD. Every woman has the right to undergo surgery without wondering if the people performing it are licensed professionals.

People need to watch this film and films like it. We need to watch it and remind ourselves why we are fighting, why we push day in and day out to abolish abortion. But we also have to show this film to those who don’t understand what the abortion industry is really like. We have to tell them the truth.

Help us share this message. We can’t let Gosnell be forgotten.

Gosnell is expected to be released this year. Stay tuned to for more information on how you can see it and bring it to your own campus.

What would a late-term abortionist say to med students? I found out.

By Michele Hendrickson, Capital Area Regional Coordinator

Last week, on February 3rd, Johns Hopkins University’s Medical Students for Choice hosted Dr. Leroy Carhart at an open invitation dinner event. Dr. Carhart is one of only a handful of late-term abortionists in the country, who by his own admission has committed 80-100K abortions, and hasn’t done a lecture in public for years.

Around 6:45PM, a crowd of 50 or so gathered inside one of Armstrong Medical Education Building’s lecture halls in preparation for Carhart’s talk.

As we all lined up to sign-in to the building’s security desk, I realized Leroy himself was just one person behind me awaiting his turn.

The man who I’ve only read about in press releases that covered his latest medical fiasco, was now so close to me that I could determine which parts of his shirt needed to be tucked in a bit more.  (The right side)

The evening ran a bit behind while we all waited for the Chinese food delivery to arrive, although I hardly had an appetite.  My goal for the night was to fit in and glean as much information as I could.  This was a huge chance to honestly observe and learn the perspectives of late-term abortion supporters.  Here were some of the highlights:

  • Carhart reflected on his past experience with Supreme Court cases and fighting against the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban, [in the first few minutes] “In reality if you think about an abortion, there isn’t an abortion done that doesn’t remove part of the fetus before it dies, and the rest of it afterwards. So it was really, could be interpreted as a total-abortion ban. Or definitely was interpreted as a second-trimester ban.  Anything after 14 weeks.” Unless of course, you are Leroy Carhart, one of about four others in the entire country who makes a living ending the lives of babies as far along as 30+ weeks.  Babies who can feel pain or be born and survive.   He prided himself of being among the few to perform “fetal injections”, thus euthanizing the baby from the inside as a loop hole to the Partial-Birth Ban.
  • JHU student and Voice for Life member Katherine Hamlet asked Carhart his opinion on the upcoming Supreme Court case, Whole Women’s Health vs. Cole, which challenges many of the common sense requirements finally being placed on abortion facilities. Certainly someone like Leroy Carhart who has claimed the lives of young women through abortion would see the importance of running a clinic that is up to par, yes?  Not so much.

“As far as like having hospital-type requirements for the clinic, which is what they want, ya know 250 square foot surgery rooms, 6ft aisles and 6ft hallways, and it’s just ludicrous.  It’s just not needed.”

  • I often hear challenges from students such as, “no one knows when life begins” or “it’s not a baby”, yet here they all sat in awe and wonder as Carhart spoke on and on… about dead babies and the methods he uses to kill them. He described the importance of using the fetal injections because then “[the babies] were not alive after the first visit.  They were dead
  • [Beginning of the tape] He explained the Supreme Court ruling that it was “illegal to remove a fetus partly before killing the fetus, and then deliver the rest of the parts.”

About 15 minutes in, he explained how he knows a baby could never be born alive using his procedure of fetal injections because “We know the baby has been dead for multiple days.”

  • Carhart made a few confusing and contradictory statements concerning his role in the woman’s choice to have an abortion. He made a statement that he performs abortions at such late stages of gestation based on “extreme cases” and not simply due to “unplanned pregnancies”.   [About 12 minutes] “Most of us are probably results of unplanned pregnancies (laughter from the audience).  However there are pregnancies that are devastating to a woman’s plans.”

Then he changes his tune and says, “Certainly if it was an unplanned pregnancy and they come to the office I’ll take care of them.  I see my part as a provider to provide abortions to the people who have made up their mind that that’s what they need.  I will not help the patient to make that decision… I’m not going to put myself in her head and say if it’s a good idea or a bad idea.”

Then later when pressed on the issue he states, “I have to be totally convinced that they know that this is not just the option that they need, but it’s the only option that they need.”

A student continues to push, “Is that just like a gut feeling?”

Carhart responds, “I don’t know.  I hope we’ve made it a little more scientific than a gut feeling.  I can tell you I’ve rejected people who everybody else thought we should do.  And, should I do that?  I don’t know.”  — wait, what??

  • Hang in there, we’re almost to the end of the evening, and almost at the pinnacle of shocking statements. This next comment is brought to us by a student who asked, “What is your advice for those wanting to become future abortion providers?”

[About 17:20] “When you’re burned out of doing labor and delivery and OB and Gynecology and you’re 55 or so, you might come back and work in the abortion field.”  Did I just hear that correctly?  When you’re done bringing life into the world, switch it up and end some instead.

  • [About 20:30] Student Question: “I’m wondering if your clinic provides any support, mental health support, for the women who come see you.”Carhart: “We don’t – but we have referral sources.” Anyone shocked here?
  • Someone asked Carhart to explain some of the worst fetal abnormalities he has seen [around 40 minutes in]. He lists several but then defends aborting babies with Down Syndrome. He discusses how he hears from families who have a child with Downs who is doing great but says that you can’t even know that in advance so aborting babies with Downs is fine to do.

As the evening came to a close, there was one last remark Carhart gave which made everything else seem like an episode of Sesame Street.

“I believe I’m doing God’s work.”

This is not in the recording as it was an impromptu response to a question asked in a small group setting later by Andrew Guernsey, a senior at Johns Hopkins and former president of Voice for Life.  Guernsey asked if Carhart considered himself a Christian, and his response was yes.

Carhart then shared with our small group that, to him, the Bible isn’t clear on the issue of abortion.  If Jesus didn’t say anything against it exactly – then it’s all good to him.

Lastly, he offered to all the students in the room to come visit his abortion facility and see for themselves exactly what happens inside.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m starting to feel a little ill – and I don’t think it’s the Chinese food.

Carhart’s entire discussion is available here:

The very NEXT day after this talk, an ambulance was called to Carhart’s late-term abortion facility in Maryland, for the second time this year. More info is here on that call.

Douglas Karpen is the Texas Gosnell

who-is-douglas-karpenThis column was written by SFLA President Kristan Hawkins. It originally appeared on

Pro-abortion zealots want you to believe that convicted killer Kermit Gosnell was an exception. That his “House of Horrors” was the only bad apple. But you don’t have to look far to find other Gosnells. They are lurking in communities across our nation, enabled by politicians and officials who won’t enact or enforce basic regulations and health safety standards on abortion businesses because of their own utmost devotion to abortion eugenics ideology or for fear of the powerful abortion lobby. Late-term abortionist Douglas Karpen is one such man who has thus far escaped into the system, like Gosnell did for decades.

Delivering Babies Alive and Snipping Necks

Of course we all know how Gosnell infamously snipped the necks of babies who were born alive. It’s horrible to think about, but that seems to be the modus operandi for late-term abortionists. Down in Texas, Douglas Karpen does the exact same thing when he fails to kill his patients’ children quick enough, i.e. before they leave the birth canal.

In eye-opening testimony, former workers for Karpen’s abortion business have spoken out about his abhorrent practices. One of Karpen’s former operating room assistants confirmed she saw babies born alive every day but didn’t realize it was illegal. She helped Karpen with the abortions and said, “Most of the time the fetus would come completely out before he cut the spinal cord; or he introduced one of the instruments into the soft spot of the fetus, in order to kill the fetus.”

Just as Gosnell witnesses testified that they saw some of the babies breathing or moving before he “snipped” them, Karpen’s assistant described, “It was still moving, you could see the stomach, breathing. That’s when he would snip the spine.” Often, she said Karpen would pull a baby out feet first until he clamped down on the head with “Bierers” (forceps with with serrated jaws.) She had to look away after too many times watching the baby’s toes wiggling, then jerk and spread open, before finally going limp.

She and other former Karpen workers told of other ways Karpen would kill babies born alive. How he pushed a surgical instrument into a baby’s stomach to kill it, put his finger down a baby’s throat, or twisted a baby’s head to break it off his neck. And just as we saw the dead bodies of the babies Gosnell snipped, the bloody images of at least two late-term babies Karpen killed have been smuggled out of his chop shop as proof of his practices.

“Fetuses and Blood All Over the Place”

In the bloody business of abortion, the name of the game is to get women in and out quickly. One of Gosnell’s unlicensed workers testified that at times, when women were given medicine to speed up their deliveries, “it would rain fetuses. Fetuses and blood all over the place.” Another worker testified in the Gosnell Grand Jury report “that one or two babies fell out of patients each night. They dropped out on lounge chairs, on the floor, and often in the toilet.”

Karpen’s workers spoke of similar horror stories where women went into labor too early. The workers said, “We saw a lot of cases where women felt like they had to push and they had to run to the bathroom. On some occasions, we had women where the fetuses were falling into the toilet…or before even getting to the clinic.” They went on to say that one woman left her baby in a McDonald’s bathroom. Another was walking to the operating room for her abortion, but ended up giving birth in the hallway. In that case, Karpen simply picked the child up and threw him in a trash bag.

It gets worse. Another Karpen assistant said that sometimes a baby was too far along to be delivered easily: “Sometimes he couldn’t get the fetus out. He (Karpen) would yank pieces – piece by piece – when they were oversized. And I’m talking about the whole floor dirty. I’m talking about me drenched in blood.”

The fetuses and blood really did get everywhere. At Gosnell’s clinic, they backed up the facility plumbing regularly, and the janitor had to clean out the fetal parts, babies’ arms and legs, from the pipes. When Karpen’s clinic had a sewer leak, a woman at the business next door reported, “This whole area is nothing but raw sewage and bloody pieces. There were little legs coming out from one side.” It sounds like a scene out of a horror film, but the horror of abortion is all too real.

Medical Boards that Refuse to Investigate or Discipline Serious Complaints

How do mom and pop chop shops like Gosnell’s and Karpen’s stay open? Because the authorities in charge of regulating and licensing abortion facilities turn a blind eye. The Gosnell Grand Jury reported:

“The [Pennsylvania Medical] Board overlooked Gosnell’s unprofessional conduct not only in the 1970s but for the next three decades, as he continued to employ unlicensed workers to practice medicine at his clinic, and as his patients continued to suffer serious injuries or worse during abortion procedures. …

“Between 2002 and 2009, Board of Medicine attorneys reviewed five cases involving malpractice and other complaints against Gosnell. (The Grand Jury also received records of three older complaints – from 1983, 1990, and 1992 – one of which resulted in a reprimand.) None of the assigned attorneys, or their supervisors, suggested that the Board take action against the deviant doctor. In fact, despite serious allegations, three of the cases were closed without any investigation. The other two were investigated and then closed – without any action being taken.”

Similar stonewalling is taking place in Texas with the Karpen case. Operation Rescue filed a complaint against him to the Texas Medical Board in 2011 documenting years of violations, botched abortions, and at least one girl’s death. OR’s Cheryl Sullenger thought the investigation was moving along, until communications with the board dropped off. On Feb 8th, the Medical Board dismissed the case in a letter:

“The investigation referenced above has been dismissed because the Board determined there was insufficient evidence to prove that a violation of the Medical Practices Act occurred. Specifically, this investigation determined that Dr. Karpen did not violate the laws connected with the practice of medicine and there is no evidence of inappropriate behavior, therefore no further action will be taken.”

Didn’t violate the law? No evidence of inappropriate behavior?

Once again, this is just state authorities sweeping the crimes of an abortionist under the rug, and the media is trying to ignore the story. The similarities between Karpen and Gosnell are eerie until you realize that this is business as usual. This is what 40 years and 55 million dead by legal abortion has wrought. This is what abortion truly is.

Gosnell Trial Verdict: We Have Only Just Begun

Statement from Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins on Kermit Gosnell found guilty of 1st degree murder for 3 of 4 babies and guilty of a majority of 250+ total charges.

“There are no victories here and this is far from over. The women and children Kermit Gosnell killed are still dead. The families he destroyed with his lies are still suffering. Abortion is still legal in America and is being perpetrated in the same corrupt and dirty ways Gosnell did it for 40 years. Our generation has only just begun our quest to obtain justice for the 55+ million baby girls and baby boys who have killed by legal abortion and to save untold millions more from the same fate.

“Gosnell’s filthy practices are simply business as usual for the abortion industry and its Goliath, Planned Parenthood. We know there are other Gosnells out there. It’s time to expose these front alley butchers.”
