Saint Xavier University, a Catholic university on the South Side of Chicago, has created a committee on campus to ensure that pregnant and parenting students are supported and served on campus. This comes after Students for Life of America reached out to the school to inform them of deficiencies in their support system on campus and to offer our help. Camille Cisneros, the Supportive Services Coordinator for Students for Life, spearheaded a study into 19 campuses in Chicago to determine how well the school was supporting pregnant and parenting students. The school wrote back to us soon after we sent them a letter, saying, “We have formed a committee to review your recommendations and determine steps we can take or have taken to support pregnant and parenting students.”
Some of the changes implemented in just the past few months include:
- Working on creating a childcare center on campus (led by the Students for Life group)
- Finding a supporter to underwrite a scholarship for pregnant and parenting students
- Adding in diaper changing stations to their upcoming renovation plans
- Discussing maternity parking (parking for pregnant students and staff) with campus safety
These are just some of the changes they are working on and we are sure there will be more. Saint Xavier University is a great example of what every university should do. Some of the changes will likely come quickly; setting aside 3 or 4 parking spots for pregnant students can be done quickly. Other changes, such as establishing a childcare center can take longer. Either way, showing pregnant and parenting students that they will be supported can go a long way towards restoring respect for human life and for the family.
