Thanks to the work of Students for Life leaders in Kansas, a proposed Planned Parenthood facility has been delayed from opening, going on at least 4 months since the facility was slated to open in Kansas City, Kansas (it is up for dispute whether they are trying to open a new abortion facility or just a referral center; there is another Planned Parenthood abortion facility nearby in Overland Park, so either this facility would serve as a referral center or would end up committing abortions). Through the work of these students, it is estimated that at least 700 preborn babies have been saved from abortion, based off the average number of abortions committed in Missouri and Kansas.
A flyer announcing the new Planned Parenthood facility noted an opening of late summer 2019; it is now the end of 2019, and the new facility has yet to open.
Pro-life students, including Students for Life Action state captains Kyra Lampe, Gabby Lara, and Charlee Bonczkowski, have been consistent in working to push back against Planned Parenthood and ensuring that Kansas City and the Wyandotte County Commission (which oversees Kansas City and the county) are aware of the problems with Planned Parenthood.
Lampe recently presented over 600 signatures from local pro-lifers, in opposition to the new facility. She also spoke at the commission meeting, sharing the concerns of pro-lifers in Kansas City and in the broader Kansas City/Wyandotte County region.
The students have also ensured that they are regularly making their voices heard. In addition to the petitions and testifying, the students also held a protest outside of the commission building and have sent numerous letters and made phone calls to the commissioners to voice their opposition.
The first victory of Kansas pro-lifers was in convincing a funeral home to break their lease with Planned Parenthood, which wanted to open in an office building owned and on the same lot as the funeral home.
Katie Lodjic, the National Field Director for Students for Life Action, praised the great work by the Students for Life leaders saying, “People often think that they cannot take on a giant corporation like Planned Parenthood, but by using organizing tactics and consistently making their voices heard, pro-life Kansas students have succeeded in blocking a Planned Parenthood facility for four months now. We look forward to driving them completely out of the county, and eventually the entire state.”
