Fresno State University is starting the school year in a big way, by providing expecting mothers two parking spots on campus next to the Madden Library and McLane Hall on campus.
The Fresno State Students for Life and Fresno Pro-Life Future groups were able to work with the school administration to provide these parking spots to students.
Bernadette Tasy, the former president of Fresno State Students for Life and the current president of Fresno Pro-Life Future started working on this last October by inquiring about providing parking spots or parking passes to pregnant students. However, after visiting multiple departments, she was even told it could not be done. This did not stop Bernadette or the Fresno State group as eventually one individual in the administration worked with them to provide the spots.
This project was important for the group as they all knew of a parenting student who had to walk long distances to class, because they had saved her from abortion, and she was part of the Students for Life Group. The group member, Jessica Rojas, said that, “I always dreaded parking on campus when I was pregnant because of the long walk to class. I remember my walk from my car to campus taking up to 30 minutes. I am so happy pregnant students now have access to park closer to campus.”
The two groups have been shining examples of Student for Life’s Pregnant on Campus Initiative. Bernadette stated, “Sometimes, students are constantly searching for a sign so they don’t go through with an abortion. I hope that when students pass by these parking stalls, they see that they are not alone., being pregnant on campus, and that they can be pregnant and successful in school.”
The current co-president of the Students for Life group at Fresno State remarked, “Students for Life at Fresno State is always looking for new ways to support pregnant and parenting students on campus. We are so glad that the university is willing to support pregnant students, offering a much-needed service.”
Groups like the one at Fresno State demonstrate that these students are never alone and thanks to the Pregnant on Campus Initiative Students for Life groups are just another means for resources for pregnant and parenting students.
A similar effort was successful at other schools, including Ball State University. There, the student government and the Students for Life group worked together on parking spaces and in August 2018 were successful.
