After a weekend of training for the Students for Life Action state captain program, about 10 state captains and Katie Lodjic, a Students for Life Regional Coordinator, wanted to chalk pro-life messages outside of the D.C. Planned Parenthood, where several other Students for Life leaders, including some who were in town for both Fellowship Weekend and state captain training had chalked several days prior.
The students began chalking around 10 A.M. on Tuesday, July 2nd on the sidewalks. Some of the messages included, “Love Them Both”, phone numbers for pregnancy resource centers, and other supportive messages, including, “You’re Stronger Than Your Circumstances.”
An employee from Planned Parenthood came outside around 10:15 AM and told the state captains that they couldn’t chalk and they were violating the FACE Act, which is used by abortion facilities to silence protesters. When asked what he meant, the employee said that they were blocking the facility entrances, since people would have to walk around them. A state captain noted that no one was blocked from entering the doors.
The employee then threatened to call the police on them if they continued chalking on the sidewalks and blocking the entrance, even though no one was prevented from entering the facility. According to a state captain on the scene, at least 4 people were able to walk right through them to enter the facility without any trouble.
Caught on video, state captain Jaylem Durousseau challenged the state employee to call the police if they were in fact violating the law. He is caught on camera calling the police, but the state captains reported only a quick drive-by the facility without any officers stopping to talk to them.
Around 11:00 AM, the employee came out with a bucket of water but left after seeing the state captains, walking outside several times to watch them chalk. Around 11:30 AM, the employee handed a female employee a broom and he dumped water and had to clean up the chalk on the ground. (Note that at this ‘feminist’ facility, a male employee had a female employee do the cleaning). The male Planned Parenthood employee kept mansplaining and cutting off a female Students for Life leader who was asking him questions and challenging him.
Jaylem Durousseau, a state captain on the scene, said, “It was shocking that our messages of love and support for women going into the abortion facility would be so quickly washed away. The majority of the messages were about telling women about their options, which you would think a ‘pro-choice’ organization would support. But in reality the abortion lobby wants to limit women’s choices.’
