Starting September 1st, Planned Parenthood will lose its sweetheart deals with complicit politicians in cities and counties across the state of Texas, after Governor Greg Abbott signed the No Taxpayer Dollars To Abortion Providers Act. Students for Life Action leaders, including students from the University of Texas-San Antonio testified in favor of the legislation.
According to LifeNews.com, “The measure takes effect September 1 and it prevents local governments from entering into reduced tax and lease agreements with abortion businesses. It also prevents cities and counties from “advocacy or lobbying on behalf of the interests of an abortion provider or affiliate. It would affect Planned Parenthood in East Austin, which signed a 20-year lease with the city of San Antonio for $1 per month. Planned Parenthood has leased the building since 1974 and was able to renew its lease last November, and the abortion center refers women for abortions.”
Although Planned Parenthood is expected to challenge the law, a federal court has already ruled in favor of the state of Ohio, which passed a similar law. In March 2019, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of an Ohio law that barred abortion vendors from participating in state-funded programs, such as STD testing or sexual violence programs. The state and pro-life lawmakers correctly argued that the money would still be used to subsidize abortions.

Judge Sutton, writing for the majority, blasted Planned Parenthood, writing that even if there was a right to abortion, Planned Parenthood affiliates have no “due process right to perform abortions….Private organizations do not have a Constitutional right to obtain governmental funding to support their activities”
The law is a great victory for the pro-life movement, and is a good start to completely defunding Planned Parenthood of all tax dollars, at all levels of government.
There is also public support for redirecting dollars away from Planned Parenthood and towards Federally-Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which do not commit abortions and provide higher levels of healthcare.
According to a 2019 poll conducted by our Institute of Pro-Life Advancement, “By about a 3 to 1 margin (48 percent to 17 percent), Millennials said they preferred that their tax monies went to Federally Qualified Health Centers rather than the abortion giant, Planned Parenthood. ”
