A pro-abortion billboard posted by the Sanilac County Health Department in Michigan has garnered a lot of attention after suggesting that parents can’t be successful, educated, or apparently happy. The degrading billboard depicts a very pregnant woman, holding her face in her hands. At right, a blonde woman in a graduation cap and gown, looking gloatingly over at the sad pregnant woman.
So what are we to draw from this advertisement?
- Pregnancy is life-ruining.
- You can’t be successful unless you terminate unplanned babies.
- You will be super happy after your abortion, because it’s not like post-abortive people suffer PTSD, depression, substance abuse, future infertility or miscarriage, cervical incompetence, uterine perforation, or anything bad following an abortion.
In their Facebook post regarding the billboard, Protect Life Michigan said it best: “Is it just us, or does it seem like they’re telling women that we have to choose between being mothers or being successful?! Watch us do BOTH!” On the department’s webpage, it looks like they just offer contraception (which is often abortifacient, yes). So their suggestion that they could help a woman who looks 7 months pregnant is intriguing.
Our Eastern Regional Director, Michele Hendrickson, called in to the number to see what “help” they were offering women. Here’s how that went:
Me: I have a friend who got accepted to college, but she’s pregnant, and I was wondering how you all might be able to help? I saw it advertised somewhere to call this number.
Sanilac Health Department: What kind of services do you, or, your friend, need?
Me: Well she’s pregnant going into school, so not sure what you might be able to do to help her stay pregnant and in school?
SHD: Is this about that billboard? We’ve gotten a lot of calls about that today.
Me: I’m not certain how the person got this number, but this is the number that was passed along to me to call.
SHD: Well what are you looking for?
Me: Again, just what you’re able to do to maybe help her?
SHD: We only offer Family Planning Services. Maybe you should just talk to our director.
Me: OK, Family Planning Services, what is that exactly?
SHD: Let me transfer you.
*Transferred me to a voicemail*
Rightfully so, the Sanilac County Health Department has gotten plenty of calls and comments condemning this degrading billboard as the anti-feminist thing that it is. But that probably still isn’t enough. Here’s their Facebook page. Their number is 810-648-4098.
