Federal Court Rules: States Can Defund Planned Parenthood
The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Ohio can bar Planned Parenthood from receiving state taxpayer dollars. The issue arose over a law signed into place by then-Governor John Kasich which prevented groups that commit abortions from receiving state funds under several state health programs, including those targeting STDs and infant mortality (yes, it’s ironic Planned Parenthood, which kills over 320,000 babies a year, would ever receive money aimed at ending infant mortality). Today, the judges ruled that Ohio could prevent Planned Parenthood affiliates from receiving money under these programs, stating, “affiliates do not have a due process right to perform abortions.”
Writing for the majority, Judge Sutton utterly destroyed the argument in favor of a so-called right to government-funded abortions, saying a state, “may choose not to fund a private organization’s health and education initiatives. Private organizations do not have a constitutional right to obtain governmental funding to support their activities. The State also may choose not to subsidize constitutionally protected activities. Just as it has no obligation to provide a platform for an individual’s free speech, say a Speaker’s Corner in downtown Columbus, it has no obligation to pay for a woman’s abortion. Case after case establishes that a government may refuse to subsidize abortion services.”
A divided federal appeals court has ruled against Planned Parenthood, agreeing that Ohio can block public funds that could be used for abortions. https://t.co/QeO71jyyL5

Groups like Planned Parenthood want to take in as much money as possible so they can continue to abort as many babies as possible. Unfortunately for them, Millennials, when told what Planned Parenthood really does, actually prefer Federally-Qualified Health Centers by a much larger margin. According to research by our Institute for Pro-Life Advancement, “By about a 3 to 1 margin (48 percent to 17 percent), Millennials said they preferred that their tax monies went to Federally Qualified Health Centers rather than the abortion giant, Planned Parenthood.”
Today’s ruling is a victory for the pro-life cause, and Students for Life of America looks forward to the day when Planned Parenthood is defunded of ALL taxpayer funding.
