2019 Gala in New York City: Called to be a Light in the Darkness
NEW YORK CITY (03-12-19) –
Next month, Students for Life of America will be hosting our annual New York City gala. Joining us this year are some of the students from Covington Catholic High School as well as Bishop Scharfenberger of Albany. Bishop Scharfenberger stood up to pro-abortion Catholic Governor Andrew Cuomo last month before he signed that horrific piece of legislation allowing abortions in all nine months and rolling back protections on babies who are born alive during abortion procedures.
High schoolers from Covington Catholic made headlines in January after the media staged a photo with a professional antagonizer. What followed was unprecedented backlash, including threats and defamation. We stand with these pro-life students who were guilty of no wrongdoing and were put on a national stage by adults with a pro-abortion agenda.
Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins stated, “We are excited to welcome these brave students, as well as Bishop Scharfenberger, who has certainly been a light in the darkness following what has happened in New York this year. Bishop Scharfenberger has been a strong warrior for life and we look forward to hearing his message of hope.”

Bishop Scharfenberger made headlines himself with his letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo following the passage of the RHA. In it, he addressed the governor, “Although in your recent State of the State address you cited your Catholic faith and said we should ‘stand with Pope Francis,’ your advocacy of extreme abortion legislation is completely contrary to the teachings of our pope and our church.”
Hawkins noted, “Abortion is the human rights issue of our time, and the 1,200+ student groups we work with know this. Our Gala is a time of celebration of the strides we have made in abolishing abortion, but it’s also a call to action. The students from Covington Catholic and Bishop Scharfenberger are perfect guests to help us celebrate and refuel our energy to fight for the preborn.”
