Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi continues to block a vote on ending infanticide. Currently, House members are calling for a discharge petition for the legislation, which would force a vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. According to a Washington Post reporter, “A discharge petition is a procedural tactic that allows an absolute majority of the House of Representatives (218 lawmakers) to force a floor vote on a bill, even if leaders who control the House floor oppose the measure.”
In other words, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who recently invited Planned Parenthood’s president to the State of the Union, could be forced to allow a vote in the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.
Senator James Inhofe and Representative Steve Scalise, writing in a recent Fox News op-ed, added, “It is appalling and Congress must act. That is why we support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. It should be common sense in a just and moral society. This bill requires medical practitioners—those who have sworn to ‘do no harm’—to exercise equal care to a baby who survives an abortion as any other child and provides criminal penalties for anyone who intentionally kills or denies lifesaving care to a child who is born alive after an abortion.”
Students for Life is also holding a series of rally to call out Senators who voted against ending infanticide, this week. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America noted, “It is a sad reflection of politics today that the Democratic Party cannot even agree that killing babies who are born alive after a failed abortion is wrong. This has nothing to do with protecting women’s ‘health,’ a common complaint of abortion vendors when commonsense legislation is discussed. The baby has been born, living separately from the mother, and in need of care. Yet 44 Democratic Senators still want that child dead. The extremism of the Cuomo-Northam Planned Parenthood Democrats is turning off their own voters, as a new poll finds that 80% of Americans want limits on abortion. Furthermore, only 7% of Millennials, the supposed base of the Democratic Party, agree with their platform on abortion. That is why the Pro-Life Generation will be rallying and holding Senators accountable for their vote.”

As the 2020 election gears up, a vote on ending infanticide, as well as other pro-life legislation, should be an easy vote for candidates of any political party. According to a poll by our Institute for Pro-Life Advancement, 7 of 10 Millennials support limits on abortion through specific policies like parental notification, limiting abortions later in pregnancy like at 5 months of pregnancy, and opposition to government funding of abortion and only 7 percent shared the position of the Democratic Party Platform – abortion without any exceptions and funded by tax dollars.
