Yes, there are actually people that love abortion so much they spend money for the ability to be able to commit late-term abortions. This has achieved renewed attention with the revelation that pro-abortion groups donated millions of dollars to politicians like Governor Ralph Northam, who recently publicly came out in favor of infanticide.
And we know that the party platform of the Democratic Party, which is deeply in the pocket of NARAL, EMILY’s List, and Planned Parenthood, endorses unlimited abortion, on demand, and at taxpayer expense, a position shared by only 7% of Millennials.
So how much does the abortion lobby spend so they can commit late-term abortions? No formula is perfect, especially because abortion statistics are imperfect, and not all political donations can be traced. But we can get a general sense by using publicly available data.
According to data at opensecrets.org, a non-partisan campaign finance and government transparency group, tens of millions of dollars a year are spent by pro-abortion groups on campaigns.
On federal elections alone, the following PACs that are either solely focused on abortion, or have abortion as part of their agenda, spent the following sums:
- $2.4 million in the 2018 election cycle to “Women’s Issues” groups, which include mainly pro-abortion groups, such as the National Organization for Women and EMILY’S List.
- $1.07 million from groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL.
- $5.0 million plus on “liberal” groups that support pro-abortion candidates, such as Progressive Action PAC and People for the American Way.
But these don’t numbers come near to the full amount, because they only count donations to candidates, and not things like running voter turnout drives. And because groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL have a variety of state and regional affiliates, it can be difficult to come to a full number. According to the conservative Influence Watch, Planned Parenthood’s national C4, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, has a budget of around $30 million. NARAL Pro-Choice America has an $8 million budget.
Various other sources give us information; for example, a CNN article from Spring 2018 reported that Planned Parenthood was going to spend $20 million in 8 states. Also, at least $165 million was donated directly to Democrats by donors and there are only a handful of pro-life Democrats, meaning most of the money was spent electing pro-choice Democrats. The Democratic Party also spent around $1 billion on the 2018 elections. Not all of these numbers include state-level races.
So taking that all into account, let’s say that at least $1.5 billion was spent across state and federal elections to elect pro-choice candidates.
Around 1 million abortions are committed per year, as best as we can estimate. Since the data from abortion statistics that we can collect indicate that about 1.3% of abortions committed every year are after 21 weeks, we can estimate that there are about 13,000 late-term abortions per year.
That means that the abortion lobby spends at least $77,000 for every late-term abortion they commit. Yes. They want late-term abortions so much they actually pay $77,000 per late-term abortion they end up committing.
