“Women deserve better than what Planned Parenthood wants to sell them,” said SFLA’s Kristan Hawkins. “Defunding the nation’s number one abortion vendor to invest in real care for women is an absolute priority for those who care about all women — born and preborn.”
WASHINGTON D.C. (01-28-19) – Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins added her name to other pro-life leaders who today joined together to ask President Trump to use the power of his office to further defund the nation’s number one abortion vendor, Planned Parenthood. “The abortion lobby has worked tirelessly in Congress and in court to coerce Americans to fund the deadly business of abortion,” said Hawkins. “We must be just as determined to see that money go to support and care for mothers and their children, born and preborn.”
The letter to the President calling for renewed efforts to defund Planned Parenthood reads as follows:
January 25, 2019
President Donald J. Trump The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear President Trump:
First, we want to thank you for your warm welcome to the hundreds of thousands of marchers at this year’s March for Life. You summed up the feelings of the pro-life movement with your words: “When we look into the eyes of a newborn child, we see the beauty and the human soul and the majesty of God’s creation. We know that every life has meaning and that every life is worth protecting.”
Beyond those eloquent words, your actions in the last two weeks alone have been an important continuation of your outstanding work to protect life since you became president. We applaud you for your recent letter to the Speaker of the House asking for the protection of current pro-life policies, your selection of 51 judicial nominees who will defend the Constitution, and your Statement of Administration Policy in support of S. 109, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2019.
An additional promise you made during the campaign was “defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions, and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women.”This is a topic important to pro-life voters because we believe it is a true game changer to stopping Planned Parenthood from propping up the abortion industry. Because of congressional inaction, defunding remains one of your key promises that remains unfulfilled; however, there are unilateral avenues that your Administration can follow to separate taxpayer funds from the nation’s largest abortion provider — in particular, Medicaid funds, which comprise 90 percent of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding.
Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report makes it clear they do not need our tax dollars. The abortion giant’s excess revenues and taxpayer funding both hit record highs ($244.8 million and $563.8 million, respectively). In fact, taxpayer funding has increased more than 55 percent in the last 10 years, despite Republicans controlling Congress for many of those years. Meanwhile, in 2017, Planned Parenthood reported 332,757 abortions, a jump of more than 11,000 – while non-abortion services such as cancer screenings continued their precipitous decade-long decline. Defunding and redirecting federal funds to the thousands of other federally approved facilities that offer real medical care will dramatically improve healthcare for needy women.
With a recent Marist poll showing that a strong majority of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, there is no excuse for continuing to funnel more than half a billion dollars from taxpayers to the nation’s largest abortion business. That sentiment holds true even for Millennials, projected by Pew Research Center to be the nation’s largest voting bloc this year. A January poll commissioned by Students for Life of America shows that by nearly a 3-to-1 margin, Millennials want their tax dollars going to Federally Qualified Health Centers, not Planned Parenthood. Only seven percent shared the Democratic Party’s platform position of abortion without exceptions and funded by tax dollars. We believe defunding Planned Parenthood will energize your base as few issues will.
Additionally, propping up Planned Parenthood with taxpayer funds enables their donors to redirect their donations from Planned Parenthood’s clinical side to its political arms, which spend millions of dollars working against your agenda and defeating your pro-life allies in Congress.
Since Congress will not lead, we are asking you to do so. We would like to meet with you and your staff to discuss steps the Administration can take to get around Nancy Pelosi and a pro-abortion majority House. We also ask that you utilize the upcoming State of the Union address — where Americans will be eagerly watching to hear your agenda for the year ahead — to make it clear that this continued partnership between taxpayers and the death industry will not continue. You are the one person in America who can stop the taxpayers’ forced complicity in the slaughtering of over 320,000 innocent children each year.
Again, thank you for all you continue to do for the cause of life – please know that you have our gratitude and our prayers.
