WASHINGTON D.C. (11-06-18) – Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins made the following statement on the midterm election results, as the U.S. Senate increased the number of GOP seats and the U.S. House went to the control of the Democratic Party. Hawkins observed: “While the voters have delivered a split decision tonight, the pro-life movement has some impressive wins in ballot initiatives and in races like Senator-elect Josh Hawley, to name a few highlights. Abortion advocates fought tirelessly for their worldview in which preborn life is disposable, women’s health and the harms of abortion irrelevant and taxpayer dollars wasted in programs that harm women and their pre-born children. And even though we have lost some support in Congress, the #Pro-Life Generation will work just has hard to restore protections to women and their children, born or preborn. For almost 50 years, pro-life Americans have not given up our hopes for a nation in which life is protected in law. And we won’t back down now. One election doesn’t change the fact that all life deserves protection and that we love both women and their children.
“It’s interesting that those Senators in tight races who voted against the confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh lost tonight while West Virginia rewarded Sen. Joe Manchin with another term in office.
“Given the chance to influence abortion policy directly, so far tonight voters have embraced life as West Virginia and Alabama already have weighed in with legal protections. In a world after Roe, the voters will finally get to decide what abortion policy they support, and in this election, we saw people getting ready for the day in which Roe becomes a footnote in history. While the leaders in West Virginia, Alabama and Oregon had three different approaches to abortion-related law; they all agree that the values of the people of their states – rather than of a few judges – should be most important. The #Pro-Life Generation stands ready to work for laws that protect innocent, pre-born infants and their mothers.”
