Today, Huntingtown HS (Maryland) Students for Life spent a day on Capitol Hill and in D.C. learning about politics and meeting with Senate staff and several members of the Pro-Life Generation who work in D.C.
First, they met with Abigail Balmert, a staff member for Representative Andy Harris, one of the most pro-life members of Congress. Dr. Harris is a great friend to Students for Life and our students had a great time hearing from Abby about how to get involved with politics and the students also delivered thank-you notes for Representative Harris for his work to end abortion.
Then, they were able to meet with former Students for Life leader Andrew Guernsey, who now works for pro-life Senator Roy Blunt (MO). Andrew answered their questions and shared his own experiences with being pro-life and how that translates into his work for Senator Blunt.
Following a contentious couple of weeks for pro-life Senators, the students knew that many of these Senators would appreciate a friendly face. Students for Life stopped by several pro-life Senators offices and left thank-you notes, supporting their pro-life voting record. Some of the Senator’s offices they stopped by include: Senator Ted Cruz (TX), Senator Lindsey Graham (SC), and Senator Joni Ernst (IA).
Stephanie Schmitt, Capital Area Regional Coordinator for Students for Life, who helped bring the students around D.C., said, “This was a great opportunity for energetic high school leaders of the Pro-Life Generation to have their voices heard by their elected officials. We all know this has been a tough time for many pro-life Senators on Capitol Hill, and we wanted to make sure they knew we supported their support for ending abortion.”
