Students for Life of America Condemns Cowardly Attacks on Free-Speech at New Mexico State University
FREDERICKSBURG, VA and LAS CRUCES, NM (9-13-18)– On Monday, September 10th, pro-choice vandals crossed out, erased, and wrote over pro-life chalking at New Mexico State University, attempting to block the speech of fellow pro-life students. New Mexico State University Students for Life had chalked the messages at 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 9th, and around 10 a.m. on the morning of Monday, September 10th, and afterward saw that the chalkings had been vandalized. The vandalism was discovered by a few members of NMSU Students for Life, including Marcos Lares and Halee Isbell.
The school’s Student Activities was immediately contacted and expressed sympathy but said there was nothing they could do because they said they had no way of finding out who did it. A police report has been filed with Campus Security.
This was the first chalking event of the school year for the group, but the group leaders say they have plans for additional chalkings. This kind of destruction of pro-life messages has not happened to the group in recent years.
Christina Coffman, Rocky Mountains Regional Coordinator for SFLA noted, “The group chalked harmless messages aimed at recruiting like-minded individuals who would join them to protect the preborn and to help women in crisis. The harsh reaction that they received was a disrespectful sign of intolerance for diversity on campus.”
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said, “Students for Life will not allow intolerant activists to stop us from changing hearts and minds on college campuses about the need to protect preborn babies from abortion. We demand that the university denounce the vandalism and send a clear message in support of free-speech.”
Marcos Lares, the group’s president, added, “We know that these acts of hate can be discouraging but, I speak on behalf of the courageous people I work with that this will not be the end. Instead, we will continue to spread a culture of life around campus because we are the pro-life generation and we will not be silenced.”
Students for Life of America has been regularly tracking vandalism on-campus against pro-life displays, a map covering the period 2012-2018 can be found here: http://dev.studentsforlife.org/map/vandalism.php . You can see a slideshow of common violations here.
